Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

This f/2.8 lens sets a new standard for all zooms. Its unusually large maximum aperture is made possible by an extra-wide aspherical lens to provide higher optical performance in a number of ways … including effective anti-flare features and crisp-to-the-edge images. An internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

good deal for the price, focal legnth range handy when not in mood for playing musical lenses but if its got to be perfect use a fixed lens, nowhere near professional grade

Strength:

wide aperture,compact,
70+ lines res in center throughout range.very contrasty even wide open.Sharper in resolution tests than my nikkor 28f2.8 and equal to my 105ais at 105.this is tested on tripod with velvia and mirror locked up.The only correct way to analyse a lens.

Weakness:

more distortion and very slightly more flare than primes. but no problem in general shooting. enlarges well.

I have owned over 30 lenses in 20 yrs and this lens along with my ef 135f2.8 is all I take when
the trip is overseas and the picures are important.

Customer Service

used twice on 24mm and original 28-105f4-5.6 repairs were fast and reasonable.

Strength:

Range is perfect for most day to day stuff, I seldom take this lens off my F-100. (I have the Nikon one)

Weakness:

Would be nice to have less pronounced change in length when zooming, but hey, this is a 28-105.

We can gripe all day about sharpness at the wide open stops, but that is why the portable electronic flash unit was invented. This is a killer deal, even for a working photog. like myself. If you want to blow the cash, get the Nikon 35-70 f/2.8, but if you have to pay rent also, this is about as good as a deal as you can hope to find.

Strength:

Its an all around great lens when considering the price. Very happy with it. Sharpness is great from corner to corner.

Weakness:

None.

I have 15 lenses and I found Sigma is one of the best when it comes to quality and of course the price. I could not find any difference of the picture quality than of brand lens. Its so handy from wide to zoom. I use this lens for indoor and outdoor all the time. Why bother spend more money for brand names, while Sigma can do it all.

Strength:

Nice hood provided.
F2.8 at 28mm.
cheap price. Light weight.

Weakness:

Filter size 72mm.
Watch out for flare.
Zoom not lock up when holding the lens up or down 90 degree.

After 2 roles of slides and 1 negative, I quite disappoint with this lens, with its sharpness and contrast. I've traded off this lens for Nikkor 28-105 F3.5-4.5

Watch out for flare, eventhough I didn't point out toward the sun, flare appeared from the center to the corner.

My Sigma 70-210 is better than this lens. (compared with Sigma) If you use Nikon, go for 28-105 instead.

Strength:

New version has 'D' insignia to note D-lens compatibility.
Good zoom range, better than 28-80.
F2.8 at 28mm, F4 at 105mm.
Hood provided.
Light weight.
Feels more balanced than the Nikon 28-105 on my F80.
Quiet auto-focusing.
Manual focusing ring is stiff enough.
Cheap.

Weakness:

Filter size 72mm - expensive.
Can't focus as close as some newer Sigma lens such as the 28-80 Macro which can do 1:2.
Not as sharp as the Nikon 28-105.
Zoom ring a little stiff.

This lens cost half of the asking price for the Nikon AF28-135 (which doesn't even come with a decent hood) here in SIngapore. But you do get what you paid for, since it is slightly softer than the Nikon at open apertures; the Nikon also does a better job at close-range macro photography and providing better contrast/distortion control. The Sigma is however quieter (IMHO) than the Nikon at auto-focusing, and it is definitely quieter and faster than the Sigma 28-200 I tried.

Still, the images produced by the lens is great for blow-up to 8x10". Don't bother comparing its sharpness to a prime like the Nikon 35mm or 50mm: the Sigma instead provides the convenience of a zoom lens.

I find it useful as a do-all lens on my 'side-kick' F80 camera, as I mostly shoot 5x4 on my Wista field camera. Frankly speaking, if I want maximum clarity & sharpness I'd rather shoot 5x4 than 35mm (no matter how sharp the lens may be).

The price of this Sigma lens hints at no pretention to anything more than a value-for-money purchase: if you want the best 28-105 at all cost, get the Nikon. Otherwise, save the money for something else like a 17-35mm, tripod, flash whatever.

Strength:

2.8 aperture, handy range, light, very cheap in all senses

Weakness:

Aperture blades got stuck from day one, not very sharp, slow AF, heavy distortions, lousy feel, slippery surface

Well, for the price, I will keep it until I can afford a Nikkor. It takes OK pictures as long as I am prepared to remount it now and then because of the aperture blade problem

Customer Service

Bad
