Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

This f/2.8 lens sets a new standard for all zooms. Its unusually large maximum aperture is made possible by an extra-wide aspherical lens to provide higher optical performance in a number of ways … including effective anti-flare features and crisp-to-the-edge images. An internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

Strength:

Very good clarity colors and contrast.
Great range from decent size lens and light enough to use without tripod.
Nice price for lens with f2.8 - 4.0 aperture (thus the filter size).
Comes with nice hood.
Works great with Canon Elan 7e. (eye control)
I used it out in the desert for 2 weeks and it stayed sand free on the inside, and cleaned up easily, and well.

Weakness:

Plastic feel when using manual focus (but does not interfere with funtion).
Filter's almost as much as the lens.

After taking 40+ rolls with this lens (using Canon Elan 7e) I have got the feel for it and have had some great success with out door photos. I have used everything from 200 to 800 speed film, and have not been disappointed with any (even using off brand film).
Eye focus with the 7e works great, but I really haven't done any sporting events to judge speed. (I did take some shots out of a moving vehicle going through Colorado using Kodak Max 800 in daylight, and they came out increadably sharp).
I bought the Canon 7e along with the Tamron 28-80 and was so disappointed that I was going to return both. I decieded to try a different lens before returning the camera, and it turned out to be a great decision (after receiving and returning a faulty Sigma). This lens beats the snot out of the Tamron.
I'm not a professional, but if you want a great all around lens, at a nice price, I have to tell you that I am more than happy with the results that I get with this lens.
I've been using it for 8 months and love it more each time I use it.

Customer Service

The first Lens that I received had a chip problem (locked up the camera after each shot). I sent it back and received a new one in about 14 days.
Not really customer service, but was a service issue handled by Camera store.

Strength:

- Very practical zoom range
- Inexpensive
- Light weight
- Very bright
- IF (internal focusing)
- Short minimum focus distance (35 cm), suitable for macro
- Fast AF
- 'D' metering

Weakness:

- A bit soft focus at the corners
- Barrel/pincushion at zoom ends
- 72 mm filter
- Medium sharpness (not that bad for the price)
- Zoom doesn't keep closed when the lens is facing down (i.e. while transporting the camera hanging from the strip)

His is a good zoom all-purpose lens for a small spense. Quality is not terrific, but is good for the price paid.
IMHO it's not comparable to Nikkor lenses. If I had known better, I would have bought my Nikon F80 (N80 in USA) with the Nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5D, I've read very good reviews, maybe someday I'll switch to it. Anyway it is better than the standard 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 lens included with consumer cameras.
Being a zoom, it's very bright for the price, the wide open stop is very handy for portraits, while in landscapes (my favourite) you should stop it down to f/8 or f/11 to improve sharpness. I'm not satisfied with long exposures, but I think it is due to the lack of reciprocity of the film (fuji Sensia II), which needs overexposure.
The IF (internal focusing) is great when you use filters like me, in poor light conditions (twilight...), specially the polarizer.
It's fine for casual or beginner photographers, traveling, since it is very versatile, bright to shoot until the late evening and very light. If I have to carry little equipment (i.e. only a soft slim bag containing the camera and a single lens), this would be my choice.
I've used it for some macro photography. The minimum focus dinstance (I found it about 35cm, although it advertises 50cm) makes it suitable for playing, I goot some great shots of flowers, although the size ratio is far from 1:1, I think it is a good plus
The 72mm filter forces me to buy P-series cokin filters (althoug is not a bad idea at all; they are also suitable for most wide angle lenses like my Sigma 24mm).
The zoom doesn't keep closed when the lens is facing down (i.e. while transporting the camera with the strip hanging from the shoulder)
Overall, I'm a bit disappointed, maybe I expected too much from a inexpensible lens. I would like a better sharpness and lower barrel/pincushion distortions, mostly in the corners.
Bottom line: better than standard Nikon 28-80mm consumer zoom, but if you can afford, buy the Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5

Strength:

contrast,hi-resolution,sharpness from f4 as good as my primes, and yes that includes my nikkors.

Weakness:

more distortion than primes but not too extreme for traveling.
internal focus turns 105mm into 83mm at close range.

I have often read reviews on this lens complaining
about this lens sharpness. either I was very lucky with my sample lens or people are evaluating
prints-A BIG MISTAKE. when evaluating a lens USE SLIDES AND A TRIPOD it is the only way.

Customer Service

friendly ,good repair service, but I wish they could make my old 24mm2.8af compatable with my newer elan11e.

Strength:

I've been using the Sigma 28-105 for about 4 months--mostly for studio portraits using monolights.
I've been very impressed with the way it handles, and the sharpness of the images it's produced (mostly on 100 ISO Fuji film).

Weakness:

The only problem--and this is probably more a function of my style of using my Minolta 800si than of the lens--is that I find the zoom ring difficult to find in a hurry when shooting with a model.

Good lens at a reasonable price (for a 2.8-4.0). Good solid construction and a good feel.

Strength:

Good zoom range (105mm is really useful to have for keeping a little further back when taking portraits and throwing the back ground out of focus)
reasonably fast
not to heavy
near faultless image quality (see problems)

Weakness:

the lense like many zooms shows barrel distortion at the wide angle end of its range and pincushion distortion at the telephoto end. However this doesn't effect my travel photography or records of a growing family

it really has replaced 3 lenses with one . Auto focus is great espeically whentaking photos of the family
