Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

This f/2.8 lens sets a new standard for all zooms. Its unusually large maximum aperture is made possible by an extra-wide aspherical lens to provide higher optical performance in a number of ways … including effective anti-flare features and crisp-to-the-edge images. An internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

Strength:

Sharp, solid, fast

Weakness:

Haven't found any.

I've been using this lens on three different
Maxxum bodies with exelent results. I'm a stickler
for sharpness and this lens has never let me down.
I do a LOT of low light work with no problems.

Strength:

Light. Solid Construction.
Pretty good focal range.

Weakness:

Soft, warm color.
Weak Contrast.

This is a good lens for the price paid. I have had it for more than two years with many rolls of film. I would have to say it should be rate as a good lens. This lens produces great quality picture at bright condition. At low light situation, it is kind soft.
I compared the photos taken by my freind side by side (he used Leica Lens), we could not see visible differences (not enlarged). In many instances, I feel my photo is actually better, this could be the metering differences between his and mine.
One suggestion, at low light condition, compensate the exposure for 1 to 2 stops (at least with my minolta).

Weakness:

Very soft below f4. Zoom binds a little.

Speed is good. Sharpness is good throughout the zoom range at f8, but forget about using f2.8-f3.5 for anything but portraits. It's what you would expect for the price.

Strength:

Light weight for an f/4 aperture at 105mm. Focuses close. Low light fall off.

Weakness:

Very soft at 28mm wide open but acceptable at f/4 and above. During manual focusing, must turn ring gently or it compresses and binds.

Think of this zoom as a minimum f/4.0 aperture over the zoom range and it will produce acceptable images. At least that's how my sample tested. At 105mm sharpness is fairly good wide open and that's an advantage with low speed film. A good general purpose zoom.

This lens is ultra soft even at f8. A great disappointment.

This is not a pro lens and would more than likely disappoint dedicated amateurs as well. If you like soft images, this is the lens for you. You get what you pay for.

Solid feel. Fast lens.

Weakness:

Not as sharp as I would like.

A descent all around lens that could use a lot more sharpness. It's good for portraits because of it's softness.

Strength:

Size, weight, speed

Weakness:

not very sharp - especially at 105, distortion

This is a rather nice lens for the amateur or beginning photographer, but if You are looking for real good sharpness, contrast and the lowest possible distortion, You should look somewhere else. That is why I exchanged this lens for the Nikkor 28-105, which is a far better compromise (of course all these wide range zooms are a certain compromise) in terms of sharpness and contrast.
