Strength:

A great flash! The controls and interface are extremely well designed! For its size it packs a lot of power! The Automatic Focus assit light is superb and works great.

Weakness:

Have experienced random firing with this flash when it was new, but it hasn't happened for quite awhile now. The wheel that you use to secure it the hotshoe can be a pain to use if you have large fingers. It will waste regular AA's in no time! Price.

This is must have flash for your Nikon! Just use rechargeables or Lithium batteries :)

Strength:

Very versitile. Easy to use and the controls are very well marked.

Weakness:

Continued problems with reliabilty.
Flimsy bounce card.

When is flash works, it's an awsome piece of equipment than can't be touched. Great pictures with the matrix metering. Hope your luck is better than mine, reliability wise.

Customer Service

Spent 3 mos with Nikon to fix the random firing. 13 months later, the zoom motor inside the flash is going in and out on it's own. Twice to Nikon in less than 18 mos of ownership

Great flash..!! Incredibly powerful for it's size. Very advanced features and very reliable. Almost impossible to take a bad flash picture with this flash if you know the functions properly.

Weakness:

None except fragile hot shoe mount.

This flash is an immensly useful tool for creative photographers. A must have with modern bodies like N90s , F100 and F5.

Strength:

*powerfull GN# 118 @ISO 100/zoom head set to 35mm
*24-85mm auto flash coverage & fully manual @ 18-85mm flash coverage
*repeating flash
*built-in bounce card
*compact/solid construction
*rotating/tilting flash head
*multiple capability with Nikon AF bodies: F5, F100, N90(s), N80, N70 etc...

Weakness:

-price (then again- you get what you pay for if you own a Nikon body)

This flash is incredible. For some time I was looking around for a flash that would pair up well with my F100 system. Because of the price I thought I would look around for something else. I ended up going back to the SB28 because it gave too many options for my F100. Man... I'm not disappointed with the results.

The SB28's multi-sensor balanced fill flash capability makes my F100 fell like a point & shoot camera- all I had to worry about was the composition. Once you take some time reading the control diagrams and your cameras capability with the flash, the full manual controls of the SB28 is such a blast to learn. Also with the F100 and the SB28 set to Manual FP, you take fill-flash photography to top speeds of 1/4000th.

I'm still learning so much about flash photography and the SB28 has given me so many options of creativity. If you own or planning of owning a Nikon AF body- this speedlight is for you.

Model Reviewed: SB-28 Speedlight Flash

Strength:

A powerful flash that's packed with features: tilt, swivel, zoom head, manual overrides, the lot.

Weakness:

I owned an SB22 before this flash, which is smaller and lighter (and thus easier to take with you). It would have been very nice to have Minolta's easy wireless flash system (ie, without requiring an SU-4 accessory)

A great flash unit, suited for many tasks. If, however, you only need an occasional snapshot-fill, consider a smaller flash like the SB22(s) or SB23.

MY FLASH WAS DEFECTIVE; IT FIRES
BY ITSELF; I SENT IT TO NIKON FOR REPAIR BUT TO MY GREAT DISMAY IT IS STILL FIRING ON ITS OWN;THEY
DID NOT FIX IT!!!

APPARENTLY SEEMED LIKE A BEAUTIFUL FLASH UNIT. BUT ITS SITTING AS AN EYESORE IN THE CLOSET. I CERTAINLY WILL CONTACT NIKON AGAIN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENED. I HEARD THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED IN EARLY RELEASED UNITS, BUT I RECENTLY BOUGHT MINE FROM MAIL ORDER (FOCUS CAMERA) IN DEC.,1999. IT HAD USA WARRANTY. I USED THE FLASH ON MY F5.

Customer Service

AFTER 2 WEEKS NIKON RETURNED MY FLASH AS DEFECTIVE AS I SENT IT TO THEM TO
BE FIXED.

Strength:

1. More compact than the SB-26;
2. Light weight;
3. Full featured; and
4. Built-in bounce card.

Weakness:

1. Expensive;
2. Wide angle adapter must be used for 18 to 20 mm lenses;
3. Original models hot shoe foot connection was flimsy allowing the unit to flash on its own; and
4. Fragile built-in bounce card.

Expensive but excellent fill flash with F90X and F5.

Customer Service

Have used once to reinforce the hot shoe foot to prevent intermittent flashing.

Strength:

Light, versatile, good even illumination, great on-flash output compensation, FP high-speed sinc capability.

Weakness:

Have my doubts about the ruggedness of the unit - seems that it has to be handled with great care. Only time will tell...

When coupled with the F100 the results are great. 3D Matrix balanced fill flash has to be experienced to be believed - opens up new photographic opportunities.

Versatile. Can be used with any Nikon camera

Weakness:

None that I know of.

I guess other people have talked about the features. The one thing I like about this flash is that it works really well with my Nikon N70. One of the things which I always wanted in my N70 was backlit LCD panel, and this flash helps me in setting my aperture setting by looking at the backlit LCD. Really handy when taking pictures at night.
