Nikon Pronea S APS

Nikon Pronea S APS

DESCRIPTION

The technology of a serious camera. The spontaneity of a point-and-shoot. Now you don't have to choose between the two. The Nikon Pronea S is the best of both worlds. Serious camera technology. Compact size. Three picture formats. Interchangeable zoom lenses. At 16 ounces, it's one of the biggest things to happen to picture taking.

Strength:

Great pictures if you know how to use it.

Weakness:

Lens doesn't have enough zoom capabilities.

It is great and you can use other lenses on it for better zoom. I am having trouble finding a fisheye lens though.

Strength:

Light and compact, quick easy lens change, point and shoot or use manual settings.

Weakness:

None, for our use.

My wife and I couldn't be happier with the camera, especially at the sale price we paid! We bought the camera specifically for a 4-week vacation trip to East Africa, and shot a total of 34 rolls of 25-exposure film on the trip. Sure, we had some pictures that were under- or over-exposed, and some out of focus subjects. But most shots captured what we were pointing at very well.
We bought only the body and the standard 30-60mm lens, then added the 60-180 Nikon lens before the trip. The body, both lenses, extra batteries, and LOTS of film all fit neatly into a very compact carying case and weighed very little. For us it was an ideal camera for a long trip.
We REALLY appreciated the mid-roll film change ability of this APS camera, enabling us to switch from 200ASA to 400 or even 800 as the light changed or if we needed faster film due to motion of the vehicle we were riding in.
To see some of our pictures, check out our website with the story of our trip and many photos (some bad, some quite good!) www.cox-internet.com/jearle

Strength:

Compact. Relatively lightweight. Faster lens than most P&S APS
cameras. Light eyars better than the Nikon Nuvis S 2000 or Nuvis S.
Gives great pics.

Weakness:

Flash.

What else could you want for an APS Camera. For the $199.00 sale price you get an SLR, not a rangefinder. Lots of lenses for expansion as well. Buy it!

you have the battery pack!

I needed to find an autofocus camera as my eyes just aren't as good as they used to be. I have used one of the BEST cameras in my opinion, the Konica FT-1. But since I had just played around with the auto focus cameras lately, they seemed so much easier on my eyes. I have a hard time getting things into focus. So after searching around I came across this Pronea S by Nikon. After 3 days I LOVE it. The autofocus is quick and very sharp. I also like the film loading system. The fact that you can change mid roll to another speed of film, or to black and white is great!

Things I would wish for is a user group on the net. Access to the accessories that are made for it. It's like nobody stocks the battery pack!

I tried a Nikon 70-300 AF lens on it, and it still focused very quickly and super sharp the first time. I'll get one of these as I don't think the Nikkor 60-180 will really be of much use to me.

So after 18 years I'm saying good by to my old FT-1 and trying a Nikon. Looks like it's going to be fun

Strength:

Light weight, compact and easy to use.

Weakness:

Be careful if you re-wind the film and later re-load it. Ours jammed and it had to back for service.

Got this for my little lady. Been using Nikons for over 25 years now and they are all great. My AF lenses work with this camera as well. This is a nice little set-up for the party pictures, graduation, camp-outs or just to keep loaded with film.

Customer Service

Nikon Inc. film wouldn't load. They replaced the parts, checked the entire camera out.

A great, versatile APS camera. With the ability to both change film and lenses on the fly, this gives an amazing amount of overall flexibility in a reasonably priced package.

Before looking at this camera, you must identify what kind of user you are and what kind of camera you're looking for. If you're serious about photography then DO NOT buy this camera! This is NOT your typical SLR!

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, this is the perfect camera for the rest of us. I consider the Pronea S to be a hybrid camera. It will take better pictures and give you more control than the average point & shoot, yet it cannot rival the more serious 35mm SLR's (in fact, not even close). I consider this as a premium P&S w/ the SLR twist. "Snap shots w/ added control" as my photographer nut friend calls it.

Unlike a P&S, I'm able to take beautiful night shots (w/ a tripod, of course) while leaving the shutter open for up to 30 seconds. Unlike P&S, I can specify the aperture or shutter speed (but not both simultaneously). OK I'm not here to discuss every little detail about this camera...

One note about the grains in APS photos. I feel that Nikon made a poor decision in bundling the unit with Kodak films. I have switched to Fuji Nexia films and grains are not a problem any more! Of course, if you plan on enlarging your photos beyond 8 x 10 then you should still stick with 35mm. Otherwise this camera can take GREAT photographs! I wish I could share my photo album with the non-believers.

All in all, identify who you are and what you look for in a camera. If you're not too serious about photography but want a little more control than P&S, you will love this camera!

Strength:

Size and standard weight make it an ideal travel camera. Versatility of all the functions make it an ideal 'starter serious' camera, but with access to all the top range Nikkor SLR lenses. The picture quality is excellent - if you're not a professional or pretending to be one.

Weakness:

Some subjects (color/contrast) occasionally confuses the autofocus.

I bought this camera for my 10 year old daughter who expressed an interest in 'serious' photography and my wife who wanted an easy to use snap shop camera to replace her Canon Sureshot. A 100% fit for both purposes. I'm sure when my daughter gets more experienced she'll want a more precise tool but having also bought Nikkor AF lenses to fit the Pronea, I'll buy her an 'F' series as an upgrade if the time comes. Ironically, I get better results from it more quickly than from my OM's, so I also carry it around as a 'convenience' camera. I have got round the hot shot shortfall by using a flash slave. My only criticism is that some color/contrast combinations 'fool' the autofocus and I haven't yet found the best way to avoid this other than to switch to manual focus. It happens mainly when the flash is being used, but I took some awesome night photos with it! Sure, you lose a little quality from the APS format but I defy anyone to seriously spot the difference without significant enlargements! So why have they discontinued it? If you can still get one, hurry up! Or why not e-mail some of the guys who gave it a bad review and make them an offer!

Customer Service

Not needed yet, although I've lost the lens cap and am waiting to see if they can get me a replacement.

Photofinishing - See comments below

I was very discouraged with the quality of prints and gave the camera a bad review earlier. I have since discovered that the photofinisher REALLY makes a difference for APS. Using Kodak to make the prints, the pictures look great! I even had reprints made to compare with those done locally - the difference is like night and day. I love this camera!
