When I published my review for the Nikon Coolpix AW100 camera last spring, it was favorite rugged point-and-shoot ever (Nikon Coolpix AW100 Pro Review). Alas, the rugged camera competition was tough last year and the AW100 didn’t stay on top for long. The new Nikon Coolpix AW110 aims to take back the top spot with increased durability, a new 3-inch OLED display and built-in Wi-Fi. The AW110 can be submerged to 59 feet, making it the most waterproof of all self-contained point-and-shoot cameras. The AW110 can also handle drops of up to 6.7 feet and it’s freezeproof to 14F. The AW110 has built-in GPS for image tagging and it uses the same proven 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and 5x 28-140mm (equivalent) Nikkor ED VR zoom lens as the AW100.

Nikon Coolpix AW110 Rugged Camera - Now With Wi-Fi!
I absolutely loved the AW100 when I was using it last winter and spring. It was the first rugged waterproof camera I’d used where the image quality wasn’t always a letdown and it accompanied me on many mountain bike rides and ski days. Whether you’re a diver, skier, mountain biker, surfer or climber, the AW110 will be able to handle whatever you can dish out. Better cameras have come along since – especially as far as image quality goes. Since the AW110 has the same sensor and lens as the AW100, the image quality should be the same – good, but by no means the best. On the other hand, the built-in Wi-Fi and improved waterproofing are great improvements. With Nikon’s Wireless Mobile Adapter Utility app installed in your iOS or Android Smart Phone or tablet, you can wirelessly transfer photos and videos to your mobile device and share them directly to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. – no computer necessary. The app also allows you to use your Smart Phone or tablet as a remote control so you can actually view what the camera sees on your mobile display and take pictures or record video wirelessly. I haven’t used the AW110 so I don’t know how well the wireless remote control works, but being able to see through the camera lens and control the camera from my Smart Phone is pretty exciting – especially for underwater photography.
The Nikon Coolpix AW110 comes in blue, orange, black and a camo green finish. It will be available in February of 2013 for US $349.95.
