This is Sigma finally ‘relaunching’ the Foveon sensor technology! Like the previous versions, the proof is going to be in the images it produces or what can be done with the sensor technology. Twin image processors are going to be a must with the huge files this monster will generate.
Weather sealing and dust resistance hopefully will be matched with a few lens choices from Sigma that have equal or better ruggedness. Now if Sigma delivers this to the market in reasonable time frame and at a realistic pricing level they may have a new cult classic.
It’s great to see an updated Foveon sensor and a new Sigma DSLR, However, the 46-megapixels sensor spec is a bit misleading as it refers to all three layers of the sensor. In practical terms the new SD1 is a 15.3-megapixel camera. That’s not to take anything away from the new Foven sensor, though. Our tests of previous Foveon sensors have shown they produce excellent image quality with great subtle tone control. But photographers should not expect an image file with 46 million pixels from the SD1.
