Samsung has two new lines of restyled SD and MicroSD memory cards that they say deliver “best-in-class performance.” Both the Samsung High Speed Series and Plus Extreme Speed Series memory cards have a max read speed of 24MB per second and capacities of 4GB or more. The main difference between the two lines is the Plus Extreme Speed cards have a faster maximum write speed of 21MB per second. The Samsung High Speed Series and Plus Extreme Speed Series both have a new brushed steel construction that’s waterproof, shockproof and magnet proof to keep your photos safe in all conditions.
Although they’re not one of the big names in digital camera memory cards, Samsung is the world’s top memory supplier with 19 years of experience in the memory manufacturing business. There are very few actual memory manufacturers so I’m sure some memory brands are buying their memory from Samsung and then repackaging and rebranding it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The memory itself is just part of what goes into a memory card. There’s also a controller in the card, and as the emphasis on design with the new Samsung cards illustrates, there’s also how the card is constructed. Samsung calls their waterproof, shockproof and magnet proof design their “3-proof” reliability standard. All of the new Samsung memory cards “are guaranteed to survive up to 24 hours in water, withstand the force of a 1.6 ton vehicle (3,200 lbs), and resist up to 10,000 gauss (slightly less than the power of a medical imaging magnet).” This should give photographers using the new Samsung cards added confidence that their photos will be safe no matter what happens. Well – they aren’t going to protect your images if your cards get stolen. You’re responsible for backing up your own photos. But if you drop your Samsung Plus Extreme Speed memory card in a puddle and a pickup truck runs over it, your photos should be fine.
The new Samsung High Speed Series and Plus Extreme Speed Series SD and MicroSD memory cards are already shipping and should be in stores now. Prices for the High Speed Series start at $10 for 2GB SD and MicroSD cards and go up to $89.99 for 32GB cards. The Plus Extreme Speed SD and MicroSD cards come in 8GB and 16GB capacities and sell for $29.99 and $54.99, respectively.
