Products that made me go Hmmmm yet again

HMX-H106 controlsThis time, it’s handling a product that makes me scream WHAT?

The Samsung HMX-H106 in this case, the controls on the screen in particular.
The more observant among you may have spotted it.
But it really shows when you use it.

It may not be obvious from the photo, but using this camera nearly made me scream out loud.
It’s solid state disk based, huge storage capacity, robust, no hard disk to knock and damage in action.

Think about it in action, you have “T” and “W” for telephoto and wide angle. Which way round do you expect to find them?
Well, on a camera usually “W” to the left, and “T” to the right. Because usually turning a control to the left is less, and to the right is more.

Now if the control is vertical, not horizontal, which is on top?
Or which nearest you and which nearest the subject?

I found that as soon as I pressed the button on top, or when looking down on the screen the button nearest the subject, it zoomed out and not in as I expected.
I wasn’t alone, after my startled exclamation the booth staff tried it and they were surprised too.

Sometimes labelling non-obvious controls isn’t the answer.
Maybe making them do the ‘right’ thing is better.
Like not putting a door handle on a door marked “push” but using a push plate.
So make the “T” and “W” work like zooming with your feet, perhaps?
