PocketWizard Plus III Radio Slave – More Features For Less Money

PocketWizard Plus III Radio Slave – More Features For Less MoneyPocketWizard just announced the PocketWizard Plus III radio slave. Although there are now some viable alternatives, PocketWizards are still the radio flash and camera trigger of choice for most photographers. The new PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver offers a whole lot of new features *and* costs $30 less than the PocketWizard Plus II. Among the upgrades are a smaller, lighter internal antenna design; 32 channels (the Plus II only had 4 channels) with 4 groups; Long Range and Repeater modes to increase the range; and the PocketWizard Plus III also comes with a cable and adapter for connecting flashes. Previously, the cable and adapter were an extra, and for many photographers, unexpected expense. Nice touch, adding the cable and adapter to the package, PocketWizard!

I’m sure some of our readers have no idea what a radio slave is. A radio slave allows you to fire your flash or camera via a radio-controlled remote trigger. They’re standard equipment for studio photography and off-camera flash photos, a.k.a. “strobist” photography. Many digital SLRs now offer built-in remote flash capability but you need line of site for those optically-controlled systems and they only give you a fraction of the range of a radio slave. The PocketWizard Plus III has a maximum range of 500 meters (1600 feet) and since it’s controlled by radio waves, it can go through walls, trees, people, rocks, etc. – line of site communication is unnecessary.

Check out the video below for PocketWizard’s official introduction to the new Plus III transceiver:

The PocketWizard Plus III was announced today at the WPPI tradeshow in Las Vegas. You can see it in person at the PocketWizard booth at WPPI from February 20th to 23rd. For our British readers, it will also be shown in the JP Distribution booth at Focus on Imaging in Birmingham, UK, March 4-7. The press release didn’t say when the PocketWizard Plus III would be available or what the price will be. However, I dug around on some dealer sites and found it listed for US $139. The PocketWizard Plus III is compatible with all previous PocketWizards transmitters and receivers.
