This is a great kit with a lot of great features. The StarFlash 650 monolights provide enough light to work in many shooting situations. The soft boxes provide diffused, even lighting. You can also remove the internal baffles in the LightDome softboxes for more contrasty images without changing your settings. The front side of each soft box is equipped with Velcro access points so the poles can be removed for quick and easy breakdown. The bag is big and heavy, but it has sturdy grip handles and wheels for easier transporting. The stands are nice and sturdy and easy to adjust. I really enjoyed using this kit. The only real issue I had was that I think the 4 to 5 second recycle time is too slow for portraiture photography. There are other lighting kits out there in the same price range that have much faster recycle times.
We used this kit at my friend’s condo and were able to light up the whole space with beautiful, diffused, even lighting. It was quick and easy to adjust and lock the direction of the soft boxes with one hand. And again, the soft boxes are very easy to set up and break down which is really nice at the beginning and end of a shoot. The images turned out beautiful, and will be used as commercial stock photography. I also used this kit for another commercial fashion shoot (see below). When I shoot, I like to have a faster recycle time (2 seconds or less), so our only complaint was having to wait the 4-5 seconds between shots.
Overall, this kit has great power, light quality, and great features. I think the street price (approximately $1100) on this kit is well worth it. It will be especially good for photographers who don’t need to shoot a lot of photos in rapid succession. Fashion photographers might want to look for strobes with a faster recycle time, keeping in mind that they will probably have to pay more.
