Olympus has announced a new rugged waterproof point-and-shoot camera that will sell for just $199. The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-630 iHS is waterproof to 16 feet, freezeproof (14F) and can handle drops of 5.5 feet. It has a 12-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor with Olympus’s iHS system for improved image quality, 1080p full HD video and a 5x 28-140mm f/3.9-5.9 zoom lens. It can even shoot full-resolution high-speed bursts at 5 frames per second. It’s crazy what you can get for $200 now. This kind of performance would have cost you twice as much two or three years ago.

I’ve been using the Olympus Tough cameras for years while I’m mountain biking in the rain and mud, skiing deep powder days and playing in the surf. The Olympus Tough TG-630 is a great, affordable option for families who want a vacation or kid-proof camera, or for weekend warriors on a budget who want a camera to take on river trips, to the beach or to the ski resort. Olympus’s new iHS system cameras have way better image quality than their point-and-shoots from just a couple of years back, too. Drop it, dunk it and freeze it – the TG-630 is gonna deliver good photos pretty much anywhere you go. And it’s going to work way better than your camera phone when you drop it in the hot tub.
The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-630 iHS comes in white, blue, red and black. It will be available in March of 2013 for US $199.99 (MSRP).
