Olympus has added a new, fast prime lens to their Micro Four Thirds lens lineup. The M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 lens is equivalent to a 34mm lens on a full-frame (35mm) camera, a traditional focal length for photojournalists and street photographers. The new 17mm f/1.8’s Micro Four Thirds lens mount is compatible with Olympus Pen and OM-D Micro Four Thirds compact system cameras as well as Panasonic’s Lumix interchangeable lens cameras. Like the M.Zuiko 12mm f/2.0 prime Olympus introduced a couple of years ago, the new 17mm f/1.8 has a beautiful metal body and a cool focus ring that allows you to quickly switch between manual and auto focus by pushing or pulling the ring. It also has a hyper-focal guide for zone focusing, something that’s been missing from most auto focus lenses for decades.
The new M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 is a great addition to the Olympus Micro Four Thirds lens lineup. It compliments both the 12mm f/2.0 and the popular 17mm f/2.8 pancake lens. I love the 12mm f/2.0. It’s excellent for low light and street shooting and the lens itself is a piece of art. The new 17mm has the same beautiful design and the f/1.8 aperture makes it over a stop faster than the 17mm f/2.8 pancake lens and 1/3 stop faster than the 12mm f/2.0. That big aperture will make it great for low light shooting as well as photos with shallow depth-of-field. I expect the M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 will quickly become one of the most popular Micro Four Thirds lenses for Olympus OM-D and Pen camera photographers who want a fast prime lens for travel, portrait and street photography.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 prime lens will be available in December. The suggested retail price is $499.99
