Nikon Coolpix S1000pj - Digital Camera With Built-In Projector
The new Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is the world’s first digital camera with a built-in digital projector. Capable of projecting photos and video up to 40 inches (1 m), the 12.1-megapixel S1000pj has a 5x wide-angle zoom lens (28-14 mm equivalent) with Nikon’s VR optical image stabilization, a 2.7-inch LCD display and a VGA movie mode.

A camera with a built-in projector is pretty sweet if you like to save photos in your camera so you can share them any time, any place. I am definitely not a digital projector expert, but I do know how to use Google – so I did a little research in order to put the Nikon S1000pj’s built-in projector in perspective. The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj’s projector has a resolution of 640 x 480 (VGA) and a brightness rating of “up to 10 lumens.” It can project from a maximum distance of about 6 and a half feet (2 m) and the battery will last for about an hour when you’re running the projector. That seems pretty weak compared to standard “portable” digital projectors, which put out 2000 lumens or more of light at much higher resolutions. However, the S1000pj compares very well to brand new, “ultraportable” projectors, which range from about 10 to 50 lumens and have roughly the same resolution. Considering that the price of the camera is about the same as an ultraportable projector alone, the Coolpix S1000pj looks like a really good deal – especially if you like the idea of being able to share photos without passing your camera around or packing a bunch of cables when you’re on the road. Just don’t expect the projector’s image quality to match what you see on the computer or your HD TV.

The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj will only be available in tough-guy black. It should be in stores in September at a suggested retail price of $429.95.

The idea of having a projector in a camera sounds like a nice idea, but with vga only its very limited and is more of a toy then a something i would get.

    belola-
I agree. The image quality is going to be pretty poor. And that’s why I put in an hour or so of surfing to find out more about what was standard for digital projectors. There are some pocket-sized projectors out there, though. And the S1000pj’s projector specs are in line with those projectors. So if you’re the kind of person who would buy a pocket projector, then the new Nikon is a good buy because you can get the projector and a camera all in one package.

What’s that you ask? Would I buy one? Don’t think so :-)

Nikon Coolpix expands its collection with S1000pj model, a compact camera that integrates a projector to view your photos on the wall or similar surface, without connecting to a computer or TV. With just one click, you can project your images and share the time without cluster around the LCD. It also includes a remote control that lets you control the projector and the normal functions of the camera wirelessly and easy support for the projection for optimal viewing of images.
