Photographers who want it all but want it in a small, affordable package should check out the new Nikon Coolpix P520 superzoom camera. The P520 has a ridiculous 42x 24-1000mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, equipped with Nikon’s VR optical image stabilization. To put that lens in perspective, Nikon just announced an 800mm telephoto SLR lens that weighs 15 pounds and costs $18,000 (Nikon AF-S 800mm f/5.6 VR Super-Telephoto Lens. That makes the Coolpix P520 look like a damn good deal, doesn’t it? Besides that huge zoom range, the P520 has P,A,S,M manual shooting modes, built-in GPS and full HD video with stereo sound.

The Nikon Coolpix P520 is a great camera option for people who want a smaller and less expensive DSLR alternative. It’s also a good camera for travelers who want a really versatile all-purpose camera. The 18-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor is state-of-the-art for compact cameras, although it won’t deliver DSLR image quality. But for some people, that will be a fair trade – especially since the P520 costs a whole lot less than a DSLR with a 1000mm lens.
The Nikon Coolpix P520 comes in red, black and a dark, silvery gray. It will be available in February (2013) for a suggested retail price of $449.95.
