I recently had the pleasure of using the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G Nikkor zoom lens with the Nikon D3s digital SLR. The lens is a tank but the wonderful optics more than make up for the extra size and weight. When I saw Prettym1k3′s excellent user review for the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G zoom lens, I knew it had to be elevated to a Featured User Review. It’s an enthusiastic, detailed review for a great professional zoom lens. If you’re a Nikon FX format DSLR shooter looking for the best standard zoom lens available, read Prettym1k3′s AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G review and see if you think the lens measures up.

Featured Review: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED

Summary:
When I sold my 17-55 f/2.8 and moved to full frame, everyone told me how much of a gem the 17-55 lens is, and how I’ll regret selling it. But, alas, I couldn’t use the 17-55 on my new D700 I was about to order, nor could I justify keeping such a lens when I’m about to purchase new gear. So I sold it, assuming that I’d be disappointed with the 24-70. How wrong was I? SO WRONG.
The 24-70 ED with the (nano coating) makes sharp pictures wide open, and even sharper stopped down a tad. Sunflare doesn’t destroy my pictures anymore, but is perfectly flared. The lens hood is big and protects the glass well from bumps, and feels solid. The picture quality is outstanding.

Makes me want to get a new lens for my aging Sony Alpha.
Are you still using the kit lens that came with it, Derek? There’s a lot of great glass available for the Sony cameras, now.
I’ve had several opportunities to use his lens, as one of my best friends manages a very large, prominent camera store in Massachusetts. I was so impressed with the quality of photos produced by this lens that I wrote my own
mini review here: http://digitalslrlensesinfo.com/nikon-70-200mm-f2-8g-ed-vr-ii-af-s-nikkor-zoom-lens/
As an above reviewer states, use the lens hood, and I’d say invest in some quality filters, and then just shoot this lens. Whatever it takes to get your hands on this lens, just do it and shoot. The images produced by this lens will jump out at you!
Price is an issue, obviously. If you don’t demand the highest quality of results, then there are several cheaper alternatives. But none of them can match the images produced by this lens. It’s really that good, and it’s the reason why it costs what it does.
