Have owned/used the 80-400D for 10 years. Have had new 80-400G for 4 days; WOW!
Using it on my D600, images are super sharp @400 with high contrast. The VR works like a charm, in contrast to the old VR which I think actually CAUSED image blur. So far, all-in-all, a milestone lens! Congrats Nikon!
Excellent! Thanks for commenting, Phil! Please write reviews for the new AF-S 80-400mm VR zoom and your D600, We definitely need user reviews for both pieces of gear. Actually, I still need to add the new 80-400mm to the zoom lens user reviews section. I’ll do it ASAP. How’s the auto focus with the new lens, anyway? That was my biggest question.
I got the new one yesterday. I had the older version for many years. The new one is very sharp at 400 mm wide open(f5.6). It focuses very fast. No problem tracking birds in flight, even coming straight at you. I think it will be great for sports photographers who don’t want to spring for the very expensive 200-400. It’s a big improvement and I’m very happy with the results I’m getting.
