Casio is introducing two new 12-megapixel digital cameras, the Exilim Zoom EX-Z450 and Exilim Zoom EX-Z90. Along with the two new cameras, Casio is introducing a new feature, Intelligent AF. Intelligent AF is described as an expanded version of face detection that can identify and track subjects other than human faces. Both cameras also have a 720p HD movie mode and Casio’s Dynamic Photo function, which can create in-camera animations from still images.
Face detection is absolutely established now but it mostly benefits snapshooters taking family photos, party pictures and vacation snapshots. Expanding that technology to include subjects other than people could be very useful – if it works well. It will be very interesting to test the new Intelligent AF feature and see how well it works, what kinds of subjects it can detect and how well it tracks them. The official press release says: “By simply pointing the camera at a desired shot, Intelligent AF ensures a focused, crisp picture without an out-of-focus subject. Taking pictures of your family pet or even beautiful scenery can be done in a snap, utilizing Intelligent AF to help minimize the number of photos that need to be taken to get a perfect picture.” Sounds good, if a little vague. I wonder how it will do at the kids’ soccer game, at a concert or at the ski resort.
The Casio Exilim EX-Z450 and EX-Z90 should hit dealers in October. The champagne bodied EX-Z450 has a 4x wide-angle zoom lens and price tag of $199.99. The Exilim EX-Z90 has a 3x zoom lens and will be available in black or pink with a suggested retail price of $149.99.

The case that comes with it is too tight. It has broken the zoom button so it will no longer move. We have contacted company and they just refer us to Casio. It would have been nice for them to take responsibility for selling the camera with a case that causes damage.
