Digital SLRs
If, however, Mom’s a top-notch photog, nothing but a digital SLR will do.
DSLRs offer interchangeable lenses, speed, advanced features and the best possible image quality. Even entry-level digital SLRs have much better image quality and performance than compact digital cameras. Popular, reasonably-priced digital SLRs include the Nikon D5000, Canon EOS Rebel XS, Pentax K-x and the Olympus E-620. Many recent digital SLRs now capture HD video as well as high quality still photos. There’s also a new format called Micro Four Thirds that offers a lot of the features and performance of a DSLR in a smaller, lighter package. The price range for digital SLRs is about $600 to $1,500 and for a hundred dollars or so more you can usually buy them in a kit with one or two lenses. Canon and Nikon are the most popular brands. But moms with small hands might appreciate the diminutive Olympus E-PL1 or Panasonic Lumix GH1 Micro Four Thirds format cameras.

Waterproof & Shockproof Point-and-Shoot Digital Cameras
Does your family spend a lot of time around a swimming pool, at the beach, or canoeing or kayaking? How about giving Mom a waterproof camera, like the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010, Pentax Optio W90, Panasonic Lumix TS2 or the Canon PowerShot D10? Panasonic, Olympus, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Pentax all make point-and-shoot cameras that are shockproof as well as waterproof, which means they’re somewhat childproof and a good choice for moms with small kids. They’re built to survive juice spills and small drops on the playground.

Thanks for the excellent Mother’s Day gift guide, Patia. You did a much better job than I would have. All I can think of are cameras. I especially like the do-it-yourself gift ideas. For a lot of moms, those will probably be the best gifts. Of course, most of us guys will want to get our moms something techy we can play with. I’m planning to get my mom a digital picture frame and load it up with photos before I give it to her.
Thank YOU, Photo-John!
I think your mom will love the digital picture frame full of photos. That’s techy and also really fun and personal.
