There was some sad news for the photo industry last week. Michihiro Yamaki, the founder and CEO of Sigma Corporation, passed away at the age of 78. If you’re a photographer, Michihiro Yamaki definitely had an influence on your photography. 2011 was the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Sigma, which began with Yamaki’s invention of the first rear-attached lens converter, a bit of gear we all take for granted now. Over the fifty years he led Sigma, Yamaki’s main goal was to make high-quality, affordable photography equipment available to everyone. Sigma is now the largest, independent lens maker in the world with over 50 lenses as well as cameras and flashes in their catalog. They’re one of the most popular camera gear manufacturers on PhotographyREVIEW.com and Sigma lenses are always among the most visited products
Our condolences to Michihiro Yamaki’s family and the Sigma Corporation. Thanks to Mr. Yamaki for his contributions to camera and lens technology. He definitely made a mark on the world and left the photography industry better than he found it.
