Leica Camera AG of Solms, Germany has informed its dealer network that they will not be participating in the 2010 PMA show in Anaheim, California. This is the second such announcement from an important player in the photography industry following Canon USA’s announcement of the decision to skip PMA 2010.
Leica the legendary manufacturer of optics and cameras will be not in attendance at PMA 2010. Confirming emails sent to trade press organizations, and the earlier mentioned letter to the Leica Cameras dealers became public Monday October 19, 2010. This is a further blow to potential attendees of PMA 2010 wanting a one stop solution. Anaheim may additionally not have been the top of the destination list for many potential show participants!
This adds to the major absences at the Anaheim, California trade show. Leica indicates that they are wanting to use their events to reach customer more directly and to optimize trade show appearances to coincide with new product release dates. The Event and News link below from Leica AG has many calendar opportunities across the United States for customers to get up close and personal with Leica. Ranging from special events at camera dealers to specialty ‘micro’ trade shows the quantity and breadth of these appearances fit with what may be a new trend in photography product marketing.
Leica has stated that they will be in attendance at CES in Las Vegas, Nevada January 7-10, 2010. No booth information is available at this time. Several large dealer/distributors are linking to and announcing Leica focus as part of their participation. Upcoming this week Leica is at the Photo Plus Expo, October 22-24, 2009 in New York City.
In financially restrictive times, being aloof and merely a famous brand will alone not work. After all the end users are the ones purchasing the products! Leica does not appear to be cutting back any at all, but probably becoming more aggressive in reaching the user customer.
There are a number of new products arriving from this legendary company including the Leica S-system a MF DSLR, the compact Leica X1, and the Digital Rangefinder with the Full Frame sensor Leica M9 that warrant a lot of attention and the company is promoting them heavily.
