I knew when I bought the F900EXR that it wouldn’t match the image quality of my more expensive, larger sensor, Sony RX100 pocket camera. But that doesn’t mean the F900EXR produces sub-par images. On the contrary – the image quality is very good and it’s the only available pocket superzoom camera that can shoot RAW. In our F900EXR studio tests you can clearly see that the RAW files provide a lot more information to work with in post-processing. In other words, there’s a lot more highlight and shadow detail to be had, if you want to do the work to get it. Color is also a lot easier to adjust with the RAW files since white balance isn’t fixed with RAW images – you can change it after the fact. The extra data also means you have a much better chance of recovering a good image if you over or under expose.

As for my in-the-field experience with the F900EXR, shooting in low-light in the mornings and evenings on the Colorado Trail, the EXR auto mode did a pretty good job of getting the ISO and exposure correct. At ISO 800 the images do get a little noisy, but that was something I was willing to accept, given the other benefits of the camera. The medium-resolution JPEGs I shot on the trip could easily be printed at 8×10 and would look great inside a nice frame on my wall. The Fujifilm F900EXR can’t match the image quality of pocket cameras that have larger sensors, however, at ISO 800 and below, and at all focal lengths, images were sharp, had nice color, and had enough dynamic range for some serious post-processing.

Like I need yet another camera!
Yes, the zoom on the XZ-1 is restrictive in some situations.
But I currently have no need for anything better in my pocket.
If I was in your situation, with those opportunities out on the trail, I’d make the same decision I think.

The photos of the f900exr on your site show very nice DR for a small sensor camera. Its probably the weakest area of any small size sensor camera, glad to see fuji taking care of this.
Thanks again for the excellent reviews.
