Canon announced three new SLR lenses last night, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM. Designed for, “harsh and rigorous conditions,” the new 24-70mm f/2.8L has improved weather-sealing, durability and optics, including new UD elements, a Super UD element and new lens coatings. The two wide-angle primes both add Canon’s IS Optical Image Stabilization for up to four stops of camera shake correction. The 24mm IS and 28mm IS both also have new aspherical elements, which should mean less distortion and improved sharpness on image edges. All three lenses have Canon’s fast, silent USM auto focus motor and fast f/2.8 apertures for low light shooting and depth-of-field control.
The Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM lenses are scheduled for availability in June of 2012 for US $849.99 and $799.99, respectively. The new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM pro zoom lens should be available in April for a suggested retail price of US $2,299.99.
