Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM 35mm Zoom

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Sigma's new Hyper Sonic Motors (H.S.M.) provide silent, responsive autofocus action with Canon, Sigma, and now Nikon AF cameras. H.S.M. also permits manual adjustment of focus without the necessity of switching off the autofocus function. Focus Free mechanism keeps the manual focus ring from spinning when the camera is autofocusing.

Strength:

Solid build

Weakness:

Autofocus hunts ocasionally

Works with my EOS 3. Practical Photography in UK rated it as good as marquee lenses. The Canon 70-200 2.8L is faster in terms of autofocus but the picture quality is not worth the extra $500-$600 more. I owned the Canon for a day and sent it back. I look at my photos with my naked eye,not any test equipment, and did'nt see any difference worth the extra money, except the status symbol of an "L" lens around my neck, and looking "cool" don't make better pictures.

Strength:

This lens exudes quality. It is bright and clear and the HSM focus motor works nearly as fast and well as Canon's own USM.

Weakness:

It is just too darn soft at F2.8 and that is what you are paying for when carrying all that glass. I compared this lens side by side to Canon's own 70-200 F2.8 and the Canon was much sharper wide open. I don't know if this is possible but the Sigma appeared to have a shallower depth of field at F2.8 than did the Canon. This coupled with, what appeared to be a slightly less accurate focus, resulted in the Canon having sharper F2.8 shots...especially when viewed across the entire frame. Stopped down to F4 the Sigma performed much better but if I'm going to use F4 I'm going to go with a cheaper lighter lens.

Almost good enough wasn't good enough for me

Strength:

Fast, very quiet foucsing and very low price (40%of AFS Nikkor 80-200ED)

Weakness:

Quite heavy......

That is my most satisfied lens, high pirce/performance ratio, fast and accurate and seem very sharp when I take photo for Korea visit. I have heared some bad reviews to previous Sigma lens, but I think it have a large improvement to EX series lenses. So I highly recommand to budget buyers.

Strength:

Very sharp and great colour reproduction even at the 2.8 aperture. Full time manual focusing system. Fast focus due to HSM. Comes in a padded carry case with removable tripod collar and lens hood. Capacity to be converted to a 400 5.6 with a 2x converter. Shares 77mm filter with lenses that are a perfect match (ie 28-70/80 2.8 lenses). Focus ring feels great in the hand. Lens feels solid.

Weakness:

Zoom ring is a bit stiff and hard to rotate. Tripod collar hinders zooming and stiffness of zoom ring only adds to the problem.

The results from this lens have been very pleasing. Matched with a good film like Reala I have had some results that I have been extremely proud to call my own. Truly a great lens. I am especially happy with the performance at 2.8.

Strength:

Quick, Sharp, Awesome!! Great Color ad contrast!! A lot cheaper than Nikon!!

Weakness:

? It has some? Actually it does hunt just a tad but because of the overall speed it is still much faster than the other lenses I own.

GREAT LENS! ALL I HAD HOPED IT WOULD BE. After shooting about 5 rolls the clarity and quality of the photos are as good as the test shots I did with the Nikon counter part and check the price I bought it for $599 from Focus Camera! No gray market or bait and switch rip offs! If you must throw away your money on OEM products for the sake of pride buy the Nikon. If you want to take great pictures and save money GET THIS LENS!!

Customer Service

Quick to answer phones and questions! Haven't had to send them anything yet!

Great for indoor Sports

Like the feel
Sharp at 2.8

Weakness:

none so far

I was looking at the Canon L Lens but local photographers suggested I look at this lens. They had used it and were quite happy with the results. So far I have found it to provide sharp, top quality images, matched with my A2. I primarily shoot B/W and develop my own so I maintain the QC through the process. The color I have shot however has been excellent also!

Strength:

Sharp, fast, very quiet, no distortion throughout range.

Weakness:

None that I have noticed

I feel that this lens is truly TOP QUALITY. I know it is a superior lens to my old 80-200F2.8 Nikon and feel that it matches the quality of the new Nikon 80-200F2.8S lens-----AT A FRACTION OF THE COST! Give it a few years, and we'll see if it can pass the "test of time" Will it hold up like the Nikon lenses do?

Customer Service

I haven't needed service yet. I have found the service department to be very responsive and professional when I have made some queries.

* Accurate colours and contrast.
* Strong feel
* Internal focusing
* Lens doesn't extend when zooming or focusing
* Comes with detatchable tripod mount and petal shaped lens hood
* Fast focusing, just a tad slower than the Nikon AF-S.
* Excellent focus tracking- 144 photos at the Australian Open on continmous servo/continuous shooting at 5 frames/sec with Nikon F100 and only 3 out of focus!!!
* Full time manual focusing.

Weakness:

* Zooming ring is a little too tight for my liking (being too picky).
