Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM 35mm Zoom

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Sigma's new Hyper Sonic Motors (H.S.M.) provide silent, responsive autofocus action with Canon, Sigma, and now Nikon AF cameras. H.S.M. also permits manual adjustment of focus without the necessity of switching off the autofocus function. Focus Free mechanism keeps the manual focus ring from spinning when the camera is autofocusing.

Strength:

Excellent photo quality. Best lens for the money. Ability to adjust focus without switching camera to manual. Although goofy I like the plastic lens hood. I have had bad experience with metal hoods. High quality glass.

Weakness:

Lens hood a little goofy. Inherently heavy as all other pro lenses

You can't touch this lens within its price range and with half the cost of the Nikon and as high of quality photos. I say you can not go wrong. Recommended to anyone wanting a fast lens in that zoom range.

Customer Service

Haven't had any problems

Nikon 80-200mm. Big and slow. Quality was good but not near as fast as the Sigma HSM. AF-S model was out of my price range.

Strength:

Speed, Tripod moount, PRICE, 2.8, flexibility of usage, great case, included hood

Weakness:

focusing ring can seem a bit small

This lens is my dream come true. Great speed. I find I can get many more shots with the 2.8 that I just couldnt get at all before. You cant find a better priced lens in this range either, though watch the ad's for prices being jacked-up.... My next move is a 2x for it for a good outdoor sports lens. This lens is hands down the most practical lens in my bag, and the best spent money. I recommend it to anyone. Pro's may want the Canon 2.8 .... but I dont know anyone who could justify the additional cost!

Strength:

Great for sports action photos. 2.8 works well in gyms and low light situations. I really like the 70-200 zoom range. This lense is much more affordable than simmilar Nikon lenses. Hood, tripod mount, and case all included

Weakness:

Heavey, but that is expected from a pro lense.

Great FAST sports photography lense at an affodable price.

Strength:

Fast and quiet autofocus (very smooth)
Can manually adjust focus while autofocusing
Very sharp, even at 2.8
2.8 aperture throughout zoom range
Performs well with 1.4x teleextender
Excellent construction
Relatively cheap in price
Solid construction

Weakness:

Slight tendency for autofocus to hunt back and forth.
Zoom ring a bit hard to turn - could use smoother action, larger ring, and better placement (if possible)

This has got to be the best deal out there - not only in terms of money, but in terms of quality. The pictures i get on this thing are sharp - even wide open at 2.8! I've had good success with the 1.4x tele-extender. A bit on the heavy side, but I just can't consider this a weakness for what you get.

Low light shooting is a pleasure with this lens! This is my favorite lens - I liked it so much that it was dictated my shooting style.

Very Highly Recommended

Strength:

Fast AF- a tiny bit slower than USM but Excellent. Constant 2.8 Max Aperture. Internal Focus. Sharp as TACK. Removable tripod ring, Includes hood, case.

Weakness:

Tripod ring gets in the way of Zoom ring when mounted so you have to zoom from the top instead of the side; Big, but expected for type of lens.

This lens is A BARGAIN for the quality! I shot a sports Night game where I have to use 3200 iso film to freeze action with my 5.6 300 but I had 1/200 shutter speed with 800 with the constant 2.8, unlike photos from similar situations with other lenses, the images were tack sharp and high-detailed! They almost looked like daylight pictures! Overall I say it's 90% of the Canon equivelent, at a MUCH better price differential! I was skeptical at first but after seeing the results, I'm a believer!

Strength:

Silent & fast AF, Quality Hood, Tripod Mount, wider angle of 70mm

Weakness:

Tripod Mount intervene the zooming operation, when attached.

Best buy for buck. I wouldn't spend more to those AF-S. Quite good with F5.
If you consider Nikkor 80-200mm AF-D, better get Sigma.

Strength:

Seems as sharp and very nearly as fast AF as Nikon AF-S I have used. Light compared to comparable Canon and Nikon models. Well balanced on my F-100 with or without monopod. Works quite well with Sigma 2X converter for motor sports and field sports. GREAT PRICE!

Weakness:

AF-S and USM owners sneer at me (they must be jealous of the my mega $$$ savings)

A GREAT lens, and I don't mean "for the price". It matches the performance of the high-priced Nikon glass I rented several times before choosing to give the Sigma a chance. It is a top choice for anyone needing something in this class. As a bonus it is significantly lighter than its OEM counterpart which makes it much easier to hand hold, even with the 2x converter in place (with a little practice). Did I mention the $$$ savings.

Customer Service

They are always responsive with my numerous product questions. Nice people.

Strength:

Durability, ease of operation, beautiful.

Weakness:

The tripod mount gets in the way.

This is a very capable piece of equipment. The photos are extremely sharp and the auto focus is lightning fast, much faster than the non-silent wave version of the Nikon. If you are not brand specific (Nikon, Canon, ....ect) this lens would be a great addition to your bag.
People that complain about the weight have no idea what the competions lenses weigh. This lens fits nicely in the hand and the ability to "micro" focus is very, very nice.

Customer Service

None required thus far.
