Strength:

Well balanced with my (F80 + grip) Fast autofocus Pricise metering Very sharp Maximum constant aperure f2.8 is good for fast indoor action, even in dim light. Fit on hand. Excellent colour, high constrast Tripod collar

Weakness:

Difficult lens cap removal with HB-7 lens hood attached. (like Tamron lens cap is better). M.O.D: 1.3-1.5m should be better.

The best dollars value telezoom lens I have ever used (newest version with tripod collar). At first I bought this lens for portraits (wedding photos) after hearing a lot of goods things about it, but good too for landscape and sport. I am very happy with the result that I got. At the same 105mm, the result is sharper than my 28-105 f3.5-4.5D. Bright image in viewfinder. Tripod collar is good. A little heavy, with SB-28, the weight over 2.5 kg, you''ll become Hercule year after year.

Strength:

Sharp, contrasty glass. Fast AF performance. (big improvement over previous design!) Very weather resistant nice heavy reliable feel to the lens, balance is great on F100 body with or with out MB15 battery pack. Tripod mount very handy.

Weakness:

None found in two years of shooting with it.

Sharp...VERY Sharp! This lens has to go down in the Nikon legend of otical designs. Glass has excellent contrast, ED elements provide outstanding sharpness and color rendition throughout the focal range and at all apetures. Minimal light fall off when shot wide open but gone by f5.6. Nice bokeh at F4 and F2.8 though. Auto focus very fast for non AFS design. Especially when coupled to my F100, a bit slower on my N80, but this is not the fault of the lens. The coreless AF drive motor found in the N80 simply doesn''t have the amount of tourqe that the F100 has. When used with the F100 I have had no problem shooting hockey games. I have tested the AFS version, and yes it''s quick but in my opinion not worth the extra money unless you make a living shooting only sports which I do not. Having said all that my recomendation is this....get one. You''ll be glad you did!

Strength:

Sharp, and inexpensive

Weakness:

I do not know

I bought non AFS version because I do not use for sporting events required fast movement. I paid for 900 dollar. I am extremely happy with the result that I got. It is very very sharp, not like my 28-105. This lens is one of my popular lens. The price is also very reasonable.

Strength:

Easy of use - even for a beginner like me. Particularly, the smooth zoom control and the seperate manual focus control. Moreover, the lens is well balanced with my F100 body. I also liked the little touches such as a high quality hard case which comes standard with the lens (well, at least in Australia).

Weakness:

A little heavy at first at just over 2kg with a F100 camera body. Also it attracts a lot of attention from people when in use.

I gave considerable thought as to whether this lens would be of value (AUD 1,935)to me. After testing one, I was sold. The quality of the latest ''''''''N'''''''' version is excellent - in build, contrast and sharpness. The one bit of advice I do have is this - if you intend to make photography a hobby, buy the best you can first time because to up-grade later is a very expensive path. If you don''''''''t already own this lens, you will after trying one.

Strength:

This lens is as sharp as some of the best primes, fast autofocus (tripod version), contrasty and it is a "must have lens". I never seen any "vignetting" below 100mm. Maybe he was using some "no brand" filter on the lens or maybe he was using a filter one inch tick since he believe this lens has no built quality.

Weakness:

NONE. For a 80-200mm f2.8 nobody can tell it is heavy.

I have never worried to write a review for this lens since it is one of the most famous Nikon in productions, but when I read the review that score 1-1 for this lens I have to. Don´t believe in a review that is a lone fish swiming against the tide.

Strength:

Optical quality is outstanding overall despite slight softness at 200mm. Lens finsih is excellent, and can take a lot of abuse without serious marking. The range limiter works very well and speeds up the AF considerably. Manual focusing has an excellent feel to it, not sloppy like a lot of AF lenses. It reminds me of some of my favrourite MF lenses.

Weakness:

Slight light fall off wide open and softness at 200mm. Doesn''t come standard with lens hoood and the hood isn''t fancy but does work well.

Being the old flagship of the Nikon mid range zooms before the AFS came along the 80-200 AFn-D (two ring version with tripod collar) is a highly competent performer at all focal lengths and apertures. Auto Focus speed is quite fast on the professional Nikon bodies such as the F4 and F5 and a brief test with this lens on an F100 showed it was no slouch there either. One thing I did notice was that the AF speed was nearly twice as fast on the newer version compared to the original AF version that I''d used for over 10 years. Image quality is first class, sharp, contrasty and with a very pleasing bokeh wide open. There''s a touch of softness at 200mm but it''s nowhere near as bad as many zoom lenses I''ve used over the years. Build quality is on par for Nikon''s top end lenses, solid, tough and durable. With a street price of under $900 USD in the USA and around USD $1000-1100 outside the States this lens is a bargain, especially when you compare it with some of the rubbish out there that''s fetching nearly the sam price. If you are on a budget and are thinking of buying the awful Sigma HSM, try this lens first

Strength:

sharpness

Weakness:

good, not excellent sharpness at 200mm/f2.8 (minor quibble). non-removable tripod mount collar.

I have the newest version of this lens with separate zoom and focus rings and triprod collar. It also includes a nifty Auto/Manual focus slide that is easy to reach, and a button to limit the focus range for faster focusing. The focus ring does not have the on-the-fly manual override feature that the AFS version has. Very, very nice. I''ve been using it with my D1X and this lens is quite sharp! It''s a little bit soft at 200mm wide-open @ f/2.8. But hey - you want super sharpness at these extremes with a ~6 megapixel camera, get a fixed lens! Results at 200mm f/4-5.6 become quite good. Contrast is excellent on this piece. I used to have a Sigma 70-200/2.8 and it was no where close to this lens as far as contrast goes. The tripod mount collar is not removable, but I just rotate the collar so the mount is 45 degrees offset from the top when I want to hand-hold this lens. The weight isn''t too terrible and I''ve found hand holding this lens a viable option. Though not an AFS lens, focusing is fairly fast and comparatively quiet. The back-and-forth transient focus control isn''t as good as the AFS lenses, but unless you are shooting football or hockey, I doubt anyone will need the AFS version. The front lens element is actually offset about 3/4" inside the lens housing. This sort of provides a built-in hood. Overall I''d rate this a 4.5, but I''m going to give it a 5 to counteract the lamers on this board who gave it a 1. As for value, for prices I''ve seen between 900-1100, it''s a steal for Nikon glass.

Tripod Collar too close to camera body

I bought this lens after a lot of research, and all I can say is WOW! I have been amazed at the results. I used it recently on a wildlife shoot in SA, and of the 50 rolls of film I shot, 85% of my photos were of saleable quality, and the other 15% were mainly photographer error. The lens is Super Sharp, the AF is quick on both my F100 & F80. All slides displayed wonderful colour rendition and contrast. On Provia 100F everything was Pin Sharp. For anyone who wants to get serious about thier photography, this lens is a must have. At this price/quality ratio the competition isn''t even close. The only improvements Nikon could make, is that a) the tripod collar is a touch too close to the camera body when using a battery pack and Bogen quick release adapter, and b) They are losing serious ground to Canon in the VR stakes. What wouldn''t Nikon wildlife, sports and action shooters give for a 80-200 F2.8 D AF-S VR lens. Drooool! Come-on Nikon, Catch a wake-up!

Nikon Service in the UK absolutely sucks!! I think Nikon headquarters should do something about it, it is utterly Shambolic! I bought my F80S in the UK as it is not available in most countries, and
