Strength:
Sharpness, speed, contrast, build quality
Weakness:
Size (unavoidable with a constant f2.8 zoom) Excellent lens for the money. I have compared this lens back to back with the AFS version and on the same camera focussing speed is virtually identical. Silent focussing and full time manual are the advantages of the Silent wave version, but at a higher cost and with increased weight. This is one of my favourite lenses. Strength:
Sharp, fast, accurate. I shoot wide open almost all the time and it's still sharp.
Weakness:
Durability? Excellent performing lens. I'm rough on my gear so my doubts about the durability of this lens may not apply to everyone. You need this lens if you shoot sports. Customer Service Excellent. Broken metering contact was repaired at no charge. Similar Products Used: None |

I finally bought the newer two-ring version after fifteen years of using the old f/4.5 lens, and I'm sorry I waited so long! This lens is fantastic! The focus is fast and accurate and it handles quite well even with the non-removable tripod collar. It's great for everything from landscapes to people with the best color rendition I've ever seen!
Weakness:
Sure it's a little heavier than I'm used to, but it's worth it when I look through the viewfinder at a constant f/2.8! Not as fast or quiet as the new AF-S version, but Customer Service None needed yet. Similar Products Used: 80-200 f/4.5 and 70-300 |

It is very versatile! Lens quality is at the top.
Weakness:
It is very heavy and bulky. Very very good lens - nearly similar quality as the Leica. But heavy as the Leica - what you could expect from a f/2,8 Tele-Zoom lens anyway! My bottomline is that I keep my AIS 180/2,8 as long as it works - I expect for many years to come! This heavy zoom are just at my car trunk too many times. Customer Service Very good as experienced with other Nikon Products. Similar Products Used: A Leica R8 with a Leica R Apo-Vario-Elmarit 70-180 for a 2 week period. |
