Strength:
Outstanding image quality; fine contrast; light weight and fast/quiet AF operation
Weakness:
Lens is somewhat prone to flare when the sun is in front of you This is the lens I have been waiting for Nikon to introduce for years. I often thought of buying the old 20-35, but I could not justify the price, and the need for a fixed F2.8 maximum aperture is, for me, of limited use in this sort of lens (though I do appreciate it in my 35-70/2.8). This lens is a sheer delight! It is light weight, and my slides are sharp and contrasty. A poster below thought this lens awful- I can only conclude that he had a bum lens, as I think this lens compares favorably to my other wide angle Nikkors, with the exception of my 28mm AIS lens, which is outstanding. The only area where this lens does not perform at the top rung is flare- it's got a lot of glass, and that's a perfect recipe for flare, when the conditions are right. Bottom line- this lens is a pure gem, and an oustanding value to boot. I like this lens! Strength:
Very sharp optics equivalent to Nikkor 28-105mm.
Weakness:
Very slight softness at edges at 18mm but corrected with F8 onwards. An exceptional ultrawide angle zoom with an unmatched price and optical quality expected from Nikon. Once hooked , no one will leave home without this gem. Customer Service None yet Similar Products Used: Nikkor 17-35 AFS, |

Strength:
Very Sharp,
Weakness:
Bad distortion, I wish nikon can make a 18-35mm F/4 instead of f3.5-4.5 cause is difficult for manual focus camera to know the exat aperture went difference zoom, I willing to pay much more if nikon make it a bit solid and also with MF/AF switch. The lens cap also difficult to open or close went lens hood is attached. Customer Service not yet Similar Products Used: nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AFD |

Strength:
Unbeatable performance/build for the price. Excellent results at all focal lengths, although performance falls away towards 18mm.
Weakness:
77mm filter size - filters are expensive when compared to the price of the lens. A great lens for landscape photography, even in low light conditions. Close focussing gives good close-up results as well. Portability gives it an advantage over the much heavier AF17-35mm, which may be a factor you want to consider. Great value for money, which is a good thing considering the cost of filters for this lens! Customer Service No need yet Similar Products Used: Nikon AF24mm F2.8. This is a great lens, but I like the flexibility in composition the zoom gives me. |

Strength:
Very sharp, light, affordable, contrast, top quality near 35 mm, even compared with prime lens, little vignetting, flare and ghosting even at wide end
Weakness:
The usual wide zoom barrel distortion @ wide angles, vignetting with some filters A dream lens for the price, took quite a few rolls with it on a tour to Greece in April and came back with very contrasty, sharp and saturated pictures. Even in low light, with 800 ISO neg. film, a great available light performer. I will not hesitate to use it wide open, but stopping down helps from 24 mm and wider. Light Weight, great optics, low cost.
Weakness:
Plasticky, lens hood (see below). After using the Nikkor 18-35mm AF-D ED IF lens for a while now, I have grown to really like it! I have always been a little apprehensive in spending too little for photo equipment. I was really surprised with the performance of this lens! Granted, it's no 17-35mm AF-S lens, but neither is the price. It does fit the niche being light weight, well balanced, and extremely handy for landscapes and interior shots. The optical quality is outstanding for the money. In relation to the AF-S equivalent of this lens, it's $1000.00 less money, yet performs at 95-98% of the AF-S's capibilities. I regularly carry this lens with my F100 for landscapes on long hikes. I do own the Nikkor 17-35mm AF-S but do not use it as much as the 18-35mm AF-D due to the weight issue. In scanning slides and going up to 16x20's, The resolution is truly outstanding at all focal lenghts and the corners are SHARP. I usually shoot at f/8 in the aperature priority mode on the F100 (this setting is used for most of my landscape shots on all my lens) and this seems to be the optimal setting for this lens as well. One little warning, be extremely careful when removing the dedicated lens hood (included). It clicks in place with a fairly high amount of tension. I call it a "Death Grip"! A friend of mine repairs Nikkor lenses in Switzerland and has had many repairs related to removing the lens hood. Just remember which direction the hood disengages and you'll have no problems! It's when it is forced the wrong direction thet the mechanics inside the lens can be damaged. Conclusion: Buy it, and use it, often. You'll love it!!!
