Strength:

I'll be honest in saying that this lens doesn't absolutely thrill me. But it doesn't disappoint, either. It is a decent lens for the price and an excellent starter lens. I bought this lens when I made the step up to SLR with my 10D. It takes some decent pictures. Not stunningly sharp, yet usable for a number of tasks. I'm not so sure about action shots yet, though. The main test I had with it was a volleyball game my wife was coaching. I rattled off 100 shots with this lens, and got about 15 that I was happy with. I haven't really used it since then based on this. I've learned more things to help my photography in this situation, and I have learned that I probably wasn't using the correct focus drive for the situation. That most likely accounts for the vast majority of shots I didn't care for. Even though I now know this, I somehow associate this lens with my disappointment with those shots. I've since upgraded to an older 70-210 push-pull zoom lens that I like a lot better. I may sell this lens, but I'll give it another shot before I do that. Aside from that, the build quality is good for the price, and it is fairly lightweight for the zoom you get with it. It's not a terribly fast lens apeture-wise, but it seems to work well enough. I don't think you can get a better zoom lens for the price, so I can't knock it too much! Overall, you'd be wise to start off with a zoom like this one and work from there. It's a great starting block lens!

Light, small, versatile. The perfect cheap walk-around lens.

Can't beat Canon for a great zoom at this price.

Customer Service

I have not found any company ANYWHERE that can rival the customer service of Canon. They support their products superbly and will do whatever it takes to satisfy the customer. I will only buy Canon because of their great service because the only 2 times I have had problems they have done more than I ever expected when they very easily could have brushed me off as most other companies would and have. With a heavily used video camera and a lens they have taken care of me and done so with incredible speed and courtesy. What a refreshing change in this day and age!!!

Strength:

Very light and handy Good color and contrast

Weakness:

Slow Soft Cheaply built

Not a horrible lens for a beginner. Very soft at both ends, slow and built very cheaply, but it is capable of taking some good pictures in full daylight and it's very inexpensive.

Strength:

useful focal range lightweight small sharp enough for 5x7's

Weakness:

build quality sucks

this lens looks and feels very very cheap. if i hadn't seen it in a pawn shop for $50.00 i never would have bought it. i gave it a try and was surprised at how good the pictures came out. sharp enough for 5x7's, color and contrast were faily good too. it has a good and useful focal span. it is small and very light. i usually have this lens along with a 28mm 2.8, a rebel 200 with battery pack and a 220ex flash in a lowpro bag ready to just throw in the truck when i go somewhere not aiming to do any particular photography. it makes for a cheap, lightweight useful kit. i also just leave it out when i do leave it at home. if the kit is stolen, i can easily repalce it, unlike some of my other gear, which goes in a safe when not in use.

Strength:

Very good value, good performance when used correctly. Small and light. Useful range.

Weakness:

No USM so focussing is not as quiet as with some other more expensive lenses. No hood included.

This lens is a lot of bang for the buck. It's small and light, good value and covers a useful range. It's no 80-200 f2.8 L, but considering the price difference, it's a bargain. Nice contrast and decent sharpness particularly at f8. Pleasing bokeh in portraits wide open. Keep the background distant for best effects.

Strength:

VERY light, VERY compact, good value.

Weakness:

It pretty much has NO manual focusing ring - you can turn the lens barrel with the lens in MF mode, but there is no manual focus ring or grip of any kind.

There is NOTHING wrong with this lens. I have used it for outdoor wildlife shots and I have no complaints about the sharpness. This is a FINE lens, especially if you are on a budget.

Customer Service

No need for any.

This lens is perfect for anyone who wants an 80-200mm lens or is just starting out in something like sport, or in particular, wildlife photography. I am a relative beginner with a small budget, and I have picked up some really classic shots with this lens.

Strength:

Fast auto-focus, light weight, CHEAP (thanks to weak RM/USD), compact.

Weakness:

Lack of manual focus ring.

A good mid-range lens. Used at two Formula 1 events and images are sharp. Easy to lug-around as it's light weight and is a great addition to the 24-85. Lighter and faster than the Tamron. Lack of manual ring takes an overall star off.

Customer Service

It's cheap, and feels it. Optical quality isn't great, although it could be worse. I can carry this lens in my pocket, whereas I need an elephant to carry my Sigma. Did I mention that it's cheap?
