Strength:

Sharpness from 5.6 onward.

Weakness:

Only complaint would be a little heavy but that is the only complaint and It doesn''t bother me.

I''ve read a post that said you can use the manual focus ring while in autofocus. PLEASE! Do not do this, unless you intend on ruining the USM motor and costing you alot of money. A friend of mine had a habit of doing this and burnt out the USM motor. Good lens, for best results use from 5.6 onward.

Strength:

AF, USM, f 2.8, Contrast, etc...

Weakness:

None

This is my first "L" lens of canon. I also have prosumer lenses like Canon 100mm/f2, Canon 50mm/1.4 and a Tamrom 28-105 mm/f2.8, but I must say that the difference between this lens and all the others is noticeable. The pictures are clearer, sharper even when taking them handheld. The AF is extremely fast, even at very low light situations. Thanks to the USM built in motor it''s a very quiet lens. People must understand that you can''t judege a lense by only his sharpness or AF speed. You must also compare the quality of coating, the performance wide-open, the performance stopped-down, flare, vignetting, distortions, color balance, contrast, and also the build quality. When you''ll look at all these information, than you''ll understand why "L" stands for Luxuary and why this lens is superb! (As soon as I can afford I''ll by the Canon 28-70mm/2.8 L lens...)

Strength:

2.8 aperture, sharpness is great.

Weakness:

In pressure situations the weight can be a burden, but no complaints.

I can''t believe how many people are complaining about the weight! What do you expect for a lens that goes to a focal length of 200mm and still has a 2.8 aperture? Try picking up the 200mm 1.8 then see if you will complain, or maybe the 400 2.8. This is not an amatuer lens. This is for the serious photographer who I''m sure will be quite happy about the weight considering it holds a 2.8 aperture through the focal lengths. If it''s too heavy, trade it in or work out more.

Strength:

Sharp, sharp, sharp, fast, built like a tank. Optics are superb, better than the 28-70mm 2.8 and that is an excellent lens.

Weakness:

Weight and expense.

This lens is Awesome! Excellent for portraits or any short distant shooting. A favorite lens of mine that is sharp, durable and worth every penny if you have a lot though because it is not cheap. If you have a chance try it or buy it.

Customer Service

Strength:

Sharp and indestructable

Weakness:

Nothing short of incredible optics. I shoot whitewater sports wide open with 400 print film and enlarge to 12x18. The prints are absolutely grainless and just about everyone can't beleive its 35 mm. This lens is simply world class, none finer at any cost. As I have to do extreme hiking to get to the good spots I sometimes wonder if my needs would be better served with the f4L, but I'd be terrified of losing a precious stop!

Strength:

Phenominal autofocus, optics, and durability...the best on the market in my opinion.

Weakness:

As many critics tend to say, it may be on the heavy side, but I've never seen a 70-200 f2.8 zoom that wasn't hefty. There are NO weaknesses as far as I'm concerned.

As far as 70-200 f2.8 AF zooms are concerned, there is none better than this one. Canon's USM line of lenses autofocus seemingly instantaneously and I didn't realize just how fast they were until I toyed with Canon's 80-200 non-USM f2.8. Even with a 2X converter, the lens' optics are exceptional. Shot plenty of sports at fast shutterspeeds and wide-open apertures on cloudy, low-light days with an A2E and I'm always insured of getting fine images. My first baseball shooting experience with the zoom on a drizzly, sunless afternoon sold me on it.

Strength:

Sharp, excellent color conformity, REALLY fast auto-focusing

Weakness:

HEAVY...almost too heavy to be practical

Oh, it's a beautiful lens to be sure, BUT, if you're shooting in close quarters, or without a tripod or other support, it's too heavy to be practical.

For the type of photography I use it for, outdoors, among people, especially when hiking or backpacking, one would be better served by the f4 lens that is roughly one-half the weight of this lens. This is not the sort of lens that you want to dangle from your neck while you stroll through the woods.

Strength:

Excellent quality and color reproduction at 2.8. Compared with the former 80-200, the AF speed is much faster.
sharpness is OK!

Weakness:

Too Heavy!
Too long!
Easy to scratch becuase of white color body.

The elegant white body is well fitted, I am very happy becuase the zoom ring the rotating type (not like the previous Nikon 80-200, but nikion follow the cannon right now) and Internal focusing is very fast and slient. however, when I take it to the beach, I got a moisture on the second inner glass and have to be cleaned. Next time Cannon should design 70-200L 2.8 (II) with a well water proof or design a water-proof cover/case for it.
Never Discontinuos this lens(I'm worry about this matter becuase cannon alway discontinue some "good" lens and replace a new "poor quality" )

Customer Service

Strength:

Excellent picture quality along with the versatility you get with zoom lenses. Pictures are comparable to ones taken with prime lenses. Very fast autofocus.

Weakness:

Big, heavy and expensive, but you forget about these once you see the pictures. Tripod collar could use detents every 90 degrees.

70-200/2.8 or 80-200/2.8 zooms are a valuable tool for photographers. This range is excellent for certain sports, but it really is well suited for portraiture.

The manufacturer's version is superior to the third-party offerings, since the Canon (and the latest Nikon AF-S) offer full-time manual focus, allowing the photographer to touch up the focus as needed.

The only people I know who don't recommend this type of lens are the ones who don't own one. It's not that much more expensive than the 70-200/4 L once you factor in the cost of the tripod collar.

Sharpness. Color rendition. Basically, other people have said it all. I once blow up a portrait to 11x15 inch and I could not see any grain at all !

Weakness:

Heavy, but so as other equivalent lense.

A great lense, even better than the EF135/f2.0
