Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Standard zoom lens with an Image Stabilizer and high zoom ratio. With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using flash or a tripod. Very handy for places where flash is prohibited. Uses ring-type USM for swift, silent autofocus and full-time manual focus. Closest focusing distance is 20 in. (50 cm).

Strength:

Sharp, contrasty and great focussing. IS works great. USM does the job most of the time without a fuss.

Weakness:

Barrel distortion! Lots of it! Especially at the widest end. Never seen barrel distortion so pronounced.

Good value for money, almost. I love the way it translates detail and colour onto print and slide. IS works fine, but won't replace a tripod for anything slower than 1/8 sec (I'm pushing it!). Just be careful with the wide end when shooting anything with horizontal lines. I learnt my lesson; I'll try to use it at 50mm (least barrel dist.) more often.

Strength:

Image stabilization! Great range. Sharp lens.

Weakness:

None

This is a high quality lens with an excellent range. Unlike one reviewer, I have seen NO "barrel distortion. Lots of it" at any focal length in almost a year of use.

On it's own, this one lens with a Rebel is a jewel for light weight travel. Add the companion 75-300 IS for an excellent collection.

Strength:

IS, sharpness, contrast, zoom range, USM, focusing speed.

Weakness:

Some distortion at 28mm.

It's the best consumer travel lens on the market. The IS really works wonders when carrying a tripod is not an option, or when flash photography is prohibited. It is not as sharp as some prime and L series lenses, but remmember it's a consumer zoom that costs a fraction of what the L series do. I found it very usefull when shooting in churches, museums and castles where flash photography is often a no no. the lens focuses very fast and is very silent, plus you can focus manually even when focusing on auto. the pictures that I have shot with this lens are sharp and with very good contrast. When traveling light is your preference this is the lens to go with, I highly recommend it.

Strength:

1. IS delivers! 1/8 sec. @ 28mm no problem, but I wouldn't push it too far;
2. great range (although wish it started from 24mm);
3. not too expensive;
4. very sharp for a zoom;
5. fast AF speed

Weakness:

1. build quality not the best;
2. zoom creeps when pointed downward;
3. a little to big and too long;
4. distortion at wide end noticeable

Fabulous lens, very sharp, although barrel distortion at 28mm can be a problem for architecture shots. Feels a little plasticky and not very solid, zoom creeps too (not able to stay at one focal length when extended, especially when pointed downward). But despite its weakness, it is a sharp lens with a built-in tripod (IS, ok, I am exaggerating a little here) and offers a great range. It is a one-lens-fits-all type of zoom lens, perfect travel companion. A little too big and heavy, but that's the price you pay for such a great range and IS. The 72 mm filter size might actually be a good thing -- EF 20 f/2.8 has the same filter size too. For landscape, this zoom lens and the EF 20mm should cover 95% of my needs. The AF is very fast too thanks to USM.

Buy it, you won't regret it, unless Canon comes up with a 24-135 f/3.5-4.5 IS USM!

Strength:

Very sharp images, even at edges. Low glare. Image stabiliser brilliant- well worth the extra cost.

Weakness:

Different focus setting for infinity for different focal lengths. Can only use one screw on filter for 28mm setting.

Outstanding lens.

Focal Lengths Are Great...28mm-135mm Is Ideal For Most Photography...The Image Stablizer Works Fantastic...70mm @ 1/10Sec And Still Crisp...Lense Hood Is Not That Expensive...A Clean And Clear Image At All Focal Lengths...

Weakness:

Lense Seems To Subtly Zoom When Inverted...Different Maximum Apatures At All Focal Lengths Is An Annoyance...Could Be Faster...

All In All, The 28mm-135mm IS USM Is The Only Choice Of Lense At This Price...The 28mm-80mm L Series Is The Next Step...This Lense Somes Close To The Quality Of An L Series Lense - At Half The Price...

Strength:

* IS
* Focal range - 100 to 135 is very usefull for portraits.

Weakness:

* Would be nice if it was a bit faster of a lens, such as a 3.5 to 4.5

I have had this lens for a couple of weeks now and am very pleased with it. Coupled with my Elan 7E, the focusing is fast and quiet, and is a good all around lens that stays on my camera. The IS is very helpful for me, since I enjoy taking quite a few landscape and available light photos, it allows me to not bring along a tripod most of the time. I too have seen impressive results - 1/8 sec. @ 28 and around 1/30 sec. @ 135! So, overall I would have to say that it is a great purchase and have no regrets. Also, my lens is still pretty new, but I haven't seen the problem people talk about having the lens creep when pointed down.

Very sharp in all apertures
Great range (very useful)
IS is a god sent
Light and well built

Weakness:

Buy this lens and leave your tripod home!
It's not well corrected as the "L" lenses, but the shaprness and contrast are incredible. For $420 it's a steel.

Traveling light is what I like. This lens opens up most possibilities for photojournalism, weddings, children, pets. It also works well as a close-up lens at 135MM.

It's is and fast handling. For me,that means getting the grab shot.

Image stabilization has made it possible to do some creative blur/sharp images. Meantime,the IS feature is as good as the positive reviews here indicate. At $475, it's got to be one of the best lens buys out there.

Check sharpness at This is an acceptably sharp lens I see detail in scenic shots with excellent contrast and tonal redition.
