Strength:
I've gotten amazingly sharp slides with this lens
Weakness:
-bad flare problems, even with hood Overall, I have been satisfied with this lens, although I plan to purchase a 24mm fixed focal length soon, and after I have that to compare - I may not be as happy with the 24mm range in the zoom. Strength:
good range zoom. Don't have to carry around three primes when you leave the house. I have taken some super clean, very sharp slides with this lense. Very fast and accurate focussing with USM.
Weakness:
Print shots not as spectacular - adequate. Not as sharp/muddier (prints) when compared to, for example, 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.8 lense This is a convenient consumer zoom with a good range for everyday shooting/snapshots. Prints are consistently acceptable (this is not a rousing endorsement) but slides are another story. I have taken some consistently very sharp/beautiful slides with this lense. I have taken group people shots with this lense (print) and taken the same shot with my prime 50mm 1.4 lense. The prime is much cleaner, sharper, brighter than this zoom. As someone said earlier the 24mm end of this lense does make people on the outer edges of the frame look fat and ugly (there is a lot of distortion at the wide end of this lense). All of this being said the lense, in my view, is just OK. I have read that the Tamron 24 to 135 Aspherical lense is a better choice than this lense (at a similar price). I wish I had the money to blow on a serious zoom like the 28 - 70 L series lense. Nothing but universal praise for this lense. Customer Service never used Similar Products Used: None |

One-lens solution
Weakness:
A little distortion A good lens, and one that has many strengths that keep it in my kit. I don't have to buy a wide-angle zoom (20-35 etc), because 24 is enough most of the time. It's the right range for me. The 85mm end is useful as well, for portraits (when I don't have time to change to my 70-200F4L). I wouldn't change it for a 28-70 F2.8L (unless I were given one, or it came up for stupidly low money), because I'd miss the wider angle, and the light weight. Strength:
Sharpest zoom lens in this focal lenght range I've ever used. Well constructed
Weakness:
none I don't understand the complaints about this lens. I've considered buying a second in case Canon discontinues it. I've been shooting for years, havent' changed what I do and this produces the sharpest photos. Yes, there is distortion at the wider angles but this is expected for a lens w/o special distortion correction. Use it creatively! Customer Service n/a Similar Products Used: many sigma lenses. Strength:
Well built.
Weakness:
Distortion If you are only going to buy one lens, EVER, than you should give this one a try. Personally, the distortion was too much for me. I opted for the middle of the road lens, 50mm 1.4. It is around the same price, the optics are far more superior, and the 58mm filter size is the same as my 70-210. I will get myself a fixed 24 or 28mm later. Strength:
Convenient range - I like 24mm for crowd scenes. Good USM focus speed and with manual overide. Looks great with the spiky hood - impresses the gullible.
Weakness:
Large chunk of glass with a small aperture. Silver paint rubs easily - wish I bought a black one! This came with a Canon IX as part of a kit - it overpowers that body. Good short zoom with the IX or my EOS 630 but I've gone back to a 50/1.8 for sharpness and I'm saving for a 24mm prime Customer Service No Similar Products Used: Original EF35-70 Macro. |

Actually, I don't like it very much. But it is still the best choice for those who are just to begin. In contrast to 28-80 mm cheap lens, the 24-85 mm lens would give one a sort of reward and stimulus to get excited about photography. The 24-85 mm lens are much better compared to 28-80 ones, and have a better performance/price value.
Weakness:
none The lens of choice for serious beginners and for carefull parents who wish to make their child (in his/her teens) to love creative mode of perception of things that surround us. Customer Service not yet Similar Products Used: None |

Very usefull range.
Weakness:
Nil An excellent range for snap shots. Even the legendary 28-105, in my opinion, sometimes lacks a tiny bit at the wide end. 24mm is just fine for close quarter photography. But the drawback is the distortion at this focal length, very noticeable indeed. Sharpness is quite enough, unless you are picky, then you will need to pay for the expensive 28-70. Customer Service Still don't know. Similar Products Used: 28-105, 28-70, 28-80 |

Strength:
24m is on the edge of distorting wide angle but it is corrected to keep parallel lines parallel. Rear focus USM is very fast and smooth. This lense is on my camera 75% of the time. Very versatile.
Weakness:
Nope. This lense is a MUST for any weekend warior photo buff. I own this lense and a 100-300USM. They make a great combo. Customer Service nope. Similar Products Used: Nothing similar |
