Strength:

24 mm cope well for indoor/interiors than 28mm. 85 mm good for outdoor portraits.

Weakness:

67 mm filter size

This is my standard zoom for my assignments which consist mainly weddings & functions. The 24 mm copes well with cramp interiors of apartments. The 85 mm end does well with couple portraits/groups. I'm impressed with sharpness/colours. Better than 28-105 mm.

Strength:

Nice zoom range, Acceptable sharpness especially when stopped down to 5.6 or smaller. Needed something wider than 28mm. Light weight.

Weakness:

Not as sharp as prime lenses especially wide open but then I am getting too old to carry a bunch of crap around with me. My other lenses are hefty!

Exceptional value for the money. Going to stick with Canon lenses only. I only used Canon lenses on my older F-1's, so I am not sure why I bought off-brand when switching to autofocus. I still spent the money in the end for Canon because I was not happy with the two Tamron's I bought to save money. Anybody want to buy a 200-400 Tamron or a 24-70 Tamron?

Strength:

I'm not sure where everyone gets the idea that this lens isn't sharp - for a zoom, it certainly is (maybe the distortion confuses people). It's streets ahead of the independant competition for both sharpness and build quality.

Weakness:

Distortion at extremes of range.

If you were only to buy one lens, this is the one to buy - as long as the distortion is no problem for your type of photography.

Strength:

Really versatile. You have a wide angle and a portrait lens in one. It is also lightweight and compact.

Weakness:

I will state the obvious here and say that it won't be as sharp as a 2.8mm lens for example.

The bottom line is that this is a quality lens and it's good value for money. Yes, it's not an L-series lens, but it's still sharp and quiet. I would recommend it to most photographers and would be a good back-up lens for a pro photographer.

Strength:

The zoom range is a boon for outdoor/travel photography and the odd portrait shot. The USM is great. It is amore useful range than the 28-105 lens.

Weakness:

Very poor mechanical fitting in the two expanding barrels. If Tamron can make a solid and tatally rattle free 28-200 lens why can't Canon build similar quality into their consumer grade zooms!! A metal section in the barrels would help (as in the new Tamron ).
The 67mm filter size is a nuisance.

Not cheap enough for a consumer lens or well made enough for a semi-pro unit. Canon in their literature indicate that even pros will not fail to be impressed by the results. Certainly optically I am well pleased. Stopping down one stop gives sharp results at all focal lengths. It seems that many respondents may be mistaking the difference between distortion and extreme perspective. I have found only the slightest barrel distortion at 24mm and just a little more pincushion distortion at 85mm - these effects are only discernable at the edges of the frame. My 55mm 1.2 Zuiko lens (OM), gives slight pin cushion distortion also! Of course when you tilt the axis of the camera at 24mm you will get strong perspective effects but this is NOT distortion! I hav shot many buildings inside and out without being troubled by distortion - but the sloppy lens barrels - that's another story!

Customer Service

When my lens became extremely loose in the outer barrels Canon (England)fixed it free of charge, even though the warranty was up. When I say they fixed it I mean they returned it to its previous (but still unsatisfactory) state.

Disappointing results from this lens. I bought is as a standard lens for my second EOS body (my main body has a 28-105 USM). I prefer the wider end of this lens, but the image quality does not match the 28-105 USM. I wish it did.

Strength:

24-85mm range great for indoor, scenic and portrait shoots.
Good colors and contrast.
Good build quality.
Good value.

Weakness:

Very noticeable distortion in the 24-35mm range.
Not really sharp.
Vignetting at 24mm when using filters.
67 mm filter size.
Some flare.

Very good choice when only buying/carrying a single lense. Better than the cheap 28-80. Quality of 28-70L is better, but more expensive and has a more limited range.
