Strength:
Low cost, yet good quality. Gives a good wide-angle view on an APS SLR. Light Weight. USM. Sharp images on slides with less distortion than I expected based on other reviews.
Weakness:
None that I have encountered. I use this lens on a Canon EOS IX. It really shined when I was finally able to get a particular cathedral to fit completely in the frame, having failed on a previous trip with the 28-80. The shot came out fantastic - tack-sharp, and virtually no lens distortion, with Great contrast on slide film. Highly recommended - especially if you only occasionally need a wider lens, and can't afford one of the "high-end" wide zooms. Strength:
Cheap / Ultra Wide /
Weakness:
Barrel distortion / Flare / Rotating front element It is a great lens. Print is good even for 6"x4". Due to flare mentioned above, you better have a hood, esp a floral shape one may help. However the front element rotate makes you use round hood only. (I modify a EW60II to fit this len but now become useless). Maybe a extended flexible cardboard works better to block unwanted light. Strength:
Extremely cheap for a "branded" Canon lens. Lightweight and zooms up to a significant range just right to be used as a "standard" travel lens. Wide angle coverage, brilliant for landscape photography and architectural as most of these would "fit in nicely" into the frame. It uses rather easy to find and cheap 58mm filters. An added plus when using with a Cokin P sized screw on filters as no vignetting appears, I have heard complaints of individuals using a more wider lens such as the Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, and the Canon: EF 20mm f/2.8 USM the Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM having problems with their filters showing up in the pictures. They thus have to resort to sawing off a certain part of the filter holder.
Weakness:
Distortion on ultra wide end. Tall buildings become tend to be like "The Leaning Tower of Pisa". I had problems with using 400 speed film as most of my pictures flared up even on a cloudy day. No problems with 200 speed film. Initially when I used this lens the autofocusing tends to hunt around and was unable to get a good focus. I also found out the photos taken were not sharp. This however was not due to the fault of the lens but due to my inexperience handling a wide angle lens. Not knowing that I would have to increase my f-stop to get a better depth of field. The ADEPTH function on my Canon EOS-88 fixed the clarity problems. I initially had problems shooting with the auto shooting mode due to this very autofocusing problem. This camera is a real jewel and I would highly recommend it to the beginner or intermediate user who wants to get a hang of wide angle photography. Distortion is a problem but I strongly feel that for the price and quality of this lens it is a real winner in the long run. Many people I know condemn this lens saying that it is made of cheap plastic (plastic mount) however what the heck? I took great pictures with this lens and the lenses mentioned above all of them were plastic mount and had no problems. I mean of course If I had the cash and was more serious into photography I would go for the classy higher end stuff but this lens is good enough for me to get by as a beginner and maybe even later at my advance stages. I would not give up or trade this lens with any independent lenses. I am also brand conscious, I would like to carry my Canon camera with Canon lenses and use other Canon products. I don't want to be seen with a Canon Camera and using a Sigma or Tamron lens (NO OFFENCE TO THESE MANUFACTURERS)!. This lens also makes a great compliment to the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Lens Zoom. Both these lens are a must in my camera bag now. Customer Service None needed so far. Strength:
* Great lens, especially for the price
Weakness:
* Can produce a little distortion, although not much (and at this price, that's not exactly unexpected) What a buy! For something around $150 or so, it can't be beat. It's a Canon, so the quality and optics are top notch. The 22mm wide angle is wide enough to capture much more than some of the more common 28mm lenses. Customer Service * I don't know (haven't needed it yet) Similar Products Used: * I looked at other wide angle lenses before buying this one, including the new Tamron 24 - 135mm, the Canon 20 - 35mm, and the Canon 20mm |

EF 22-55mm f/4-5.6 USM
Strength:
It's a great lens for landscape or some architetural photography. The 22 end is really wide. The lens is fast and sharp. It's also got a very reasonable price. I've had really good results from it and I'd recommend it to any canon user after a wide angle lens. The lens is actually sold with APS SLRs, but there is absolutely no reason why you cannot use it with 35mm. It is a 35mm lens before it is an APS lens.
Weakness:
None A great lens at a great price. Good for landscape, architectural or closeup photgraphy. I'd definately recommend it. Customer Service Bought from the Ritz camera chain and not impressed, they took ages to get it (months) and admitted to ordering the wrong lens twice. Similar Products Used: I'd looked at the canon 24-35 (i think) and a couple of sigma lenses. |
