Strength:
Fast and hand-holdable.
Weakness:
Lack of tripod colar for tripod work. A well deserved lengendary status. Not only a great telephoto, it is a mavelous closeup lens, especially when used with the Canon 500D dual element diopter. Customer Service Never used. Similar Products Used: Konica 200 f/3.5 Soligor 200mm F/2.8 |

Strength:
Small, lightweight, great for macro when mated with extenders, built in hood is more convienient and makes it easier to protect front lens, well built.
Weakness:
None to speak of. A pleasant surprise. I never would have purchased this lens from my own initiative, because it seems a bit short for my outdoor stuff. But a friend wanted my 80-200/2.8 that I never used, so I traded. The first thing that I liked about the lens is that it was small and easy to carry along. Also, when mated to my 27.5mm extender, I have a great macro lens. And this is primarily how I use this lens. I would recomend the 200/f4 macro first, but if you already have this lens, or if you want it for other reasons too, such as the f2.8 capability, then buy this lens and get an assortment of extenders. I like this lens more than I thought I would. Similar Products Used: Other Nikon products |

Strength:
optical sharpness as of f/4, superb colors, solid but still handy
Weakness:
noisy AF (with F90x) Colors are really splendid, certainly in comparison with the 200 mm f/4 (without ED) Extremely sharp images are possible, sharper than 80-200 AF ED and what a difference in weight. 180 mm is an excellent focal length for shooting portraits and people in general: at f/5,6 background is homogeneous and the subject really jumps out of it. Price however is not attractive in comparison with a 80-200 ED, which I use for travelling. I kept this 180 for one reason : it is too good to sell. Strength:
Remarkably sharp, solidly built, no residual chromatic aberration
Weakness:
Needs a tripod socket/collar. Can we persuade Nikon to offer this as an accessory? I am doing astronomical photography with this lens, which is a very stiff test of performance, and it performs surprisingly well -- in fact the *absence* of color fringing or other aberrations is a little disconcerting; it's as if the lens has no personality! Ordinarily you can see some aberrations in a picture of a star field taken with even the best lenses. Not this one. Similar Products Used: Olympus 180/2.8 |

Prone to flair This lens is amazingly sharp. It is so sharp that most of the times I have to use a soft focus filter for my portrait photography , otherwise every defect in the model's skin is seen in the image. Customer Service None required Similar Products Used: AF-S Nikkor 80-200 ED IF |

Non This is a first class lens. I have now sold my 300 4.5 {non ED} my 80-200 4.5 , they were not in the same class. In fact with the exception of my 55-2.8 micro & my 24-2.8 non of my other Nikkors seem much good anymore!!! Customer Service none & with a price close to the 80-200 2.8 zoom I hope I dont need any service.... Similar Products Used: 90-180 Vivitar Flat Field.. Tack sharp but not fast enough for action.. |

Great fast telephoto lens. The F 2.8 is nice for low light situations. Built in lens hood is a nice touch too. I can't comment on the autofocus quality becuase I use the lens on a FM2, but I can say that for an autofocus lens, the manual focus mode is great.
Weakness:
None Great lens for a lot of low light telephoto work Customer Service Never Needed Similar Products Used: Canon 75-300 |

It works with Autofocus!
Weakness:
Not so far! A very good lens, but not better than my old AIS 180/2,8. I did some very thorough investigation in my darkroom. I could not detect any improvements, in contrary the little difference are in the favour of the old AIS edition. Customer Service Not nessesary so far! Similar Products Used: Nikkor AIS 180/2,8 |
