EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Strength:
Sharp, fast, quiet AF, Full Time MF, an excellent portrait lens
Weakness:
None. Compare to the twin 100/2, this lens gives a slightly bigger nose than the 100/2. In fact, it's really a matter of personal taste. It's really hard to make a recommendation between these two. What I can say is that it's right to go for either one of them. They are both really nice lenses in that price range. Customer Service No idea. Haven't used it before. speed, lightweight, smooth and fast autofocus (gotta' love USM!) portability, tack sharp
Weakness:
in between range for portraits ) I prefer the 70-200 granted it is much more expensive), This is one of canon's most popular lenses. It is my ideal lens for low light situations. I specifically use it for fireworks on July Fourth. It is real sharp and should allow for reasonable enlargements. I also liked it size Customer Service NA Similar Products Used: 70-200/2.8 |

EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Strength:
This is an excellent portrait lens and it takes very sharp pictures. I also like the speed of this lens for low light work. The lens is small, quiet and fast. The lens also takes pictures with great color rendition and contrast.
Weakness:
None This has become a favorite lens of mine for portraits and general shooting. This lens is a pleasure to use because of it's image quality, speed, and light weight. The images taken with this lens rival those taken with L lens and the cost too performance ratio is great. I would recommend it over other Canon lens that have the same focal length for these reasons. My Canon 80-200mm f2.8 L takes great picture but is to heavy for just walk around people picture taking. The pictures taken with the 85mm f1.8 are equal and the lens is lighter and faster. Customer Service None Similar Products Used: Canon 100mm f2.8 macro |

Strength:
OPtical quality is second to none, build is great, full time manual feels good, and ring is well placed
Weakness:
The hood clips on, and isn't as secure as a true bayonete mount (like on the 50 f1.4). It spind, which is anoying when handling the lens/body combo, and it unclips too easily. Optically, this is certainly one of (if not THE) best lenses I have ever used. The 8 blade diaphram makes for nice soft bokeh. I have had several lenses that cover this range, but this is the one I use when doing critical work. Customer Service great Similar Products Used: 50 f1.4, 70-200 f2.8L, 28-105, Sigma 90 f2.8 macro |

Strength:
Nice portrait focal length, fast, bright aperture, easily hand-holdable.
Weakness:
none Great lens for low light, portraits. Beautiful bokeh, DOF at max aperture blows out backgrounds completely. Even though my 28-105 gets used more often, when I know I'll be shooting portraits this is the lens I reach for. Similar Products Used: Canon 28-105 |

Strength:
Easy handling, due to its relatively small size (especially when compared to other lenses I own); fast aperture allows for nice blurred backgrounds and excellent low light capability; very sharp; manual focusing is wonderful due to the large rubber ring - which due to the USM motor, also allows for full time manual focus in single shot AF.
Weakness:
Lens shade is quite displeasing - I don't like the way it clips onto the front of the lens, I would much prefer a bayonet system. Incredibly easy to handle - especially when used on an EOS3 camera (without booster grip). It also handles well on the EOS5 (with vertical grip). The lens is excellent for portraiture: 1. Because it is small - and thus does not intimidate the subject as much as a 70-200 lens would, 2. Allows for extremely shallow depth of field creating nicely blurred backgrounds, 3. Gives good low light possibility, 4. The relatively light weight of this lens doesn't mean you'll hesitate taking it with you. Similar Products Used: Canon FD 100 f/2.8 SSC |

none really I picked up this lens second hand. It came with the lens hood and I've used it several times. Thus far I'm happy with the prefomance of the lens, although it doesn't compare with the Nikon 1.4(which costs about 3 times as much, but the Nikon is also a 77mm filter also). For me I seemed to notice a real difference in the sharpnes of the primary subject at f/2.2 compared to 1.8. At f/1.8 the primary subject seems a little soft. SO I use it for most portraits at 2.2 and I'm very happy with the results. Although this isn't a "L" lens the quality is nice, and for the price it makes allot of sense. It also uses 58mm filters which are less expensive than the 77mm or 72mm. It's a great lens for a budget minded individual who wants to do some quality portrait work. It's a nice quality, well built lens Similar Products Used: Nikon 85mm f1.4 "D" |
