Strength:

Sharpness of lens No detectable flare

Weakness:

Slight distortion

For years I used the FD 24mm 2.8 with my T90. Now with my Elan 7e I purchased and use the EF 24mm 2.8. I just got back my first rolls and I''m impressed. Nice sharpness and definition. I don''t miss the USM since I shoot mainly landscapes with this and you don''t really need it. Compared to the 28-105 I like the extra 4mm of width. I will use this one alot.

Strength:

-Sharp -Moderately fast AF -Lightweight -Stationary front element -great for outdoor -hood works great -used regular 58mm Hoya Circular Polarizer with no vignetting

Weakness:

-slight distortion on edges

My second prime lens. My first was the 50mm f/1.8 (very sharp) so the 24mm had some expectations to live up to. Overall it is a great lens. I use it for mostly landscape work and some skateboard photography. Photos are very sharp. Focusing is moderately fast and you can hear it. I made the mistake when I first got it of taking a large group picture with it. The distortion near the edges stretched some heads, but the photo was still good. As long as you do not use this with people at the edges, it is a great lens. I use it mainly for landscape and other outdoor stuff so the distortion is not too evident, yet sometimes welcomed for that effect. I find that this lens competes with my 50mm for the mount on my Elan 7e.

havent needed it, but I got the import anyway so it would be through B & H

Strength:

Excellent sharpness and contrast right into the corners. Well priced, compact size. Good flare resistance for a wide angle lens.

Weakness:

Moderate distortion shows up on straight lines near the frame edges. This is of a wave shape bowed out at thre middle and in towards the edges. This can be disconcerting with some architectural subjects. I think it''s about time Canon updated this lens to USM.

I bought one of these lenses 10 years ago and have never had a problem with it, bushwalking, drenched wet, dust, extremes of cold and heat, no worries. A very sharp, general purpose wide angle lens.

Strength:

Extremely sharp Low distortion Useful focal length Fast (large aperture)

Weakness:

Not USM, but relatively fast.

Great lens with a very useful focal length. If you''re wondering whether it''s worth the money to get the extra 4mm not covered by your 28-105 zoom, the answer is "yes". Even with the wider focal length, this lens offers less distortion or barreling. Images are crystal clear and very sharp. Even when used fully open, light fall off is very minor. Most useful stop down a bit. Highly recommended.

Weakness:

non USM! Manual Focus over-ride would be great (I miss it after using the 50mm f/1.4

Great all-round wide-angel lens. This one I use as my second lens to my 50mm f/1.4. My only problem with it is when using a polariser in low light. If that bugs me too much I guess Ill upgrade to a wider lens with a better f-stop. I must admit I would like an even bigger angle of view than I am getting, but this lens does a great job as it is without distortion or flaring. Make sure you buy the hood though! and make sure you have it attached as directed or you will get major vignetting.. (made this mistake with a few shots once). I only wish the thing had USM! Why Canon? Why?

Strength:

Sharp and very little distortion

Weakness:

No fulltime autofocus override (manual focus without flipping the switch to MF)

Thus is a very fine performing lens: sharp, nearly distortion free (especially when compared to a wide angle zooms), small and light weight. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I have had no flare problems, even when shooting sunsets in Hawaii (I use a hood and a BW UV filter). In contrast, the wide end of my zooms are very flare-prone and useless for bright sunsets.

The focus is fast for a non-USM motor because only internal lens elements move. Plus the front element is non-rotating.

My only beef with this lens is that it is not USM, not because of silence or speed, it's fairly soft and fast, but because it lacks the fulltime manual focus touch up. Oh well. A nice lens for the money.

Strength:

Good build quality, compact.

Weakness:

Hood does not really cover much, some flare.

Also, must take off lens cover to change the hood position.

Good for landscapes, easy to use.

Customer Service

Pretty good in Sydney when I had to get an 80-200 fixed urgently. Incredibly slow and unhelpful in Hong Kong with the same problem (4 week turnaround versus 1 day to replace the AF/MF switch)

Model Reviewed: EF 24mm f/2.8

Strength:

It's sharp, solidly built, and a pretty versatile lens as far as wide focal lengths go. Also relatively cheap.

Weakness:

I have experienced some flare problems, which don't completely disappear with the hood attached. AF is noisy, but not a big deal for a wide angle.

This is a sharp, versatile lens. It's wide enough to be noticeably wide but long enough to take natural-looking shots. It's also relatively light and compact, even with the hood stored on it. Optical quality is pretty good, especially when you consider the price. I think flare could be better controlled; I've never shot difficult light with this lens so I can't make a concrete assessment.

A good lens overall, and it seems well sealed against dust. The front element is very close to the front of the barrel, so getting the hood is a good idea, for both flare and protection.

Customer Service

No experience yet, thankfully.

Strength:

Small and relatively inexpensive.Good close up !!!

Weakness:

None as far as I´m concerned!

This lens is lovely to work with compared to my
my L-zooms (which performs extremly well but aren´t too fun to carry around) It´s compactness make me feel comfortable.Taking crisp contrasty close up´s with extrem sharpness is truly a
nice experience. I really recommend this lens.
I traded my 20-35 2,8 L for this. I don´t regret that at all. Together with the 85 mm 1,8...I´m
ready for anything in terms of documentary and
people pictures.

Strength:

* Sharp - not as sharp as EF50/1.4 or EF100/2, but nothing is. Much sharper than any zoom in the range.
* Tiny
* Fast

Weakness:

* Flare - better than any wide zoom tho'

24mm is a good length for general wide use and this lens is the cheapest, lightest, and handiest way to get it.

Customer Service

Canon is efficient and expensive.
