Don't get a cheap consumer zoom, get this lens instead and wow people with the sharpness, contrast and color-correction of this lens. Definitely one to put in your camera bag arsonal. Strength:
Fast, silent AF
Weakness:
None. I absolutely love this lens, for taking portraits of my friends/girlfriend, I turn to this lens right away. It focuses so quickly and silently that I sometimes don't even realize that my image is focused! (People who take hold of my camera and focus are surprised at the silence and speed of focus) Customer Service None required. Similar Products Used: None |

Super Sharp. Very fast. Great focal length for a little different portrait.
Weakness:
mine sounded a bit funny, but still focused very fast. This is a great portrait fashion lens. I sold this lens to get a 70-200mm 2.8, and while that lens suits my fashion photography needs, I now wish I had the 100mm as well. Get the lens hood to protect the exposed front element. Its a great lens for indoor events, ie, concerts, fashion shows... etc. Customer Service none needed Similar Products Used: canon 70-200mm 2.8 |

Strength:
Extremely sharp and low f stop allows lots of creative control of depth of field.
Weakness:
Closest focusing distance is just under three feet. If portraits are your thing, look no further. I bought mine used for $300 from KEH and have no complaints. It is sharp as a tack, and produced beautiful images of people. The subject's eyes are always tack sharp, and the background blur is nicely shaped and colorful when portraits are shot either in or outdoors. The 2.0 f-stop allows handheld operation with 800 speed film indoors with no problem. My favorite lens and it stays on my camera most of the time. It is worth every penny. Strength:
Very sharp, fast focus, quiet operation, beautiful out-of-focus blur, more interesting contrast than the 85mm
Weakness:
Not as versatile as the zooms. Great lens for portrait and fashion photography. It has a very versatile focal length which I find useful especially in Fashion type photography. I recommend it. Not too cheap, but I think it is worth every penny. Customer Service Haven't used it yet, and I don't want to. Similar Products Used: Canon 85mm USM 1.8, this lens is also great but is too bland for my taste. Traditional portrait photographer may like t |

Fast f/2.0 is razor sharp wide open yeilding beautiful out of focus effect. Contrasty and distortionless this prime lense produces beautiful images. Fast ultrasonic focus motor.
Weakness:
Bulky. Cost the same as good zoom. D*** good lense, just a bit bulky which is the price you pay for f/2 speed. I recommend this to available light portrait photographers (my primary use). Doesn't focus close enough to recommend for general nature use although that's what extension tubes are for. EF 100mm f/2.0 USM
Strength:
Very sharp lens. It focuses very quickly. The F2 aperture is extrememly valuable in low light situations. I have an 80-200L 2.8 lens that is my workhorse in concerts. However the one stop difference between that lens and the 100 2 can be the difference between freezing the action and capturing too much blur, or between shooting at 800 speed or pushing to 1600.
Weakness:
None. This is a fantastic lens. If 100 mm is a useful focal length for what you shoot and you own Canon, you should consider this lens. Especially if you need the speed. Steve Rach Mirachi gives a great review of this lens on photo.net at http://www.photo.net/photo/canon/mirarchi/100-2.html Similar Products Used: Canon 80-200L 2.8, 28-105 3.5-4.5?, 50 1.4, & 28 2.8. |
