Strength:

None that I could tell.

Weakness:

Price. Grain.

I read the reviews on 400UC and decided to try a few rolls. I took a few rolls on a trip to Washington D.C. I got the prints a few days ago- they were extremely grainy. For something advertised as having the finest grain of any print film, (as all films are advertised) I was very disappointed.

Strength:

Bright, accurate color. Fine grain. Moderate contrast

Weakness:

A bit pricey

I have used other Portra films for outdoor photos and have generally been disappointed in the results, probably because they are portrait films. However, 400UC is entirely different. This film is excellent, grain is extremely fine, colors are bright and accurate and the film has good contrast. I typically use Fuji Reala for most of my outdoor photography; Reala is always highly rated. When placed side by side with Reala, photos from 400UC are practically indistinguishable. The lab that processes my film uses Fuji equipment, but that does not seem to be a problem with this Kodak product. For me, 400UC is now my standard 400 speed film.

Strength:

Excellent color, grain, contrast, and detail in darker areas. Wonderfull color that's still true to life.

Weakness:

Price and availability

Just returned from a long weekend in New Hampshire, in mid-October, and that is foliage time in New England. This years film was Kodak Portra 400UC (last year Portra 400VC). Results were fantastic! Portra 400UC is truely the best Kodak makes, and when combined with the new "Perfect Touch" processing makes for an absolutely unbeatable combination. Last years choice of 400VC left me a bit dissapointed as the film had a rough time with contrasty situations. Colors would saturate to the point, particularly in shadows, where all details were lost. 400UC not so, even shooting in very similar situations the film maintained excellent shadow detail. Colors were excellent, and really jump out at you, but do not look artificial. Works great with neutral density filters to slow down shutter speeds for water falls etc. Scans wonderfully, and has the grain of Portra 160VC. Excellent exposure lattitude which makes bracketing almost unnecessary. (The perfect touch processing is done didgitally and adjusts the exposure etc.). True the film is more expensive, and not available at your local Walmart, or K mart. However this is a true professional high quality film. The film to use for special trips and occasions.

Strength:

rich color, no grain, extra-sharp, beautiful skintones

Weakness:

a tad pricey

Why is my new favorite film Portra 400UC? Here's why: 1) The color: WOW! Nice, saturated but accurate color, beautiful skintones (just like you were there!), and crisp blues, greens, yellows, and reds! 2) The grain: I believe Kodak when they say that the grain is better than 160VC-it's the finest-grained film I've ever used! In most cases, you can't even see the grain-it's THAT fine! 3) The sharpness: You can see every drop of detail, every edge of corners, every speck of color! However, all this goodness comes with a price-B&H sells it for $5.90/roll. It costs quite a bit more than Kodak MAX whatever, but it's worth every penny! (At least I got it from a friend for nothing.)

Strength:

Good colour, accurate skin tones, fine well structured grain, scans VERY easily! Sharp.

Weakness:

No 4th colour layer, more prone to colour cast problems than NPH.

I'm normally a Fuji snoob but I got a sample pack after I scanned a few frames for a frien, I was impressed to say the least. Not the finest grained 400 iso film but the grain is tight and sharp, Tried the sample pack, got it developed only and threw it on the scanner, This film scans VERY well, even without canne profiles the colour and accurate skin tones stand out. Compared to fuji's 400 NPHII I'll give fuji the edge for grain but the kodak wins over for colour, skin tones, better grain structure ( this is not grain size ) also a bit sharper. Mid contrast and kodaks normally over saturated reds but this doesn't spill over into the blues. for now this is my 400 iso film of choice, plus it's cheaper than NPH to boot! You have to see the 13x19's I printed with this stuff! It's not perfect tho, this film has no 4th colour layer like fuji's films, I have slight colour cast issues in shade and flourescant lights that the fuji wouldn't have, but easily curved out in the scan ( except the blue cast in the shade ). This stuff puts 400 iso 6 mp digital capture to shame, finally a film that slowed my urge to switch.

Strength:

Very fine grain, strong colors. Good skin tones

Weakness:

Color cast on sky photos - not for landscape photograpy. Not an allround film.

First I was impressed by the fine grain and goood looking colors. There are som inportant exceptions to this. Strangely I haven't seen a review mentioning this here. It's so obvious you can't miss it if you care to look for it. The colors on pictures taken of the sky very often show color cast, it doesn't matter if it's clear blue or cloudy. The best results is from bright white cloudy sky. This film is NOT for landscape photography.

Seems to have all the desirable attributes in one emulsion.

Weakness:

My first color saturated film that does not compromise flesh tones. Nice to see the colors pop and still enjoy quality portraiture in the same print. The fine grain really brings out the best with good lenses. I personally love the results that I get when printed on Kodak Ultra Endura paper

Strength:

Very sharp close to Portra 160 ISO and good strong color with out over doing it.

Weakness:

A little hard to find

This Has to be the finest 400 ISO out there. I took some Saint Patricks Day Parade pics and was surprised at the color and how sharp they were. The photo developer said he thought it was 100 ISO from the sharpness. He did say that his machine thought it was black and white film, he had to adjust for it. I had taken a pic of one police 4x4 which had some decals. I could read them I even took my loupe 8x and I could read the small ones. I WILL ALWAYS KEEP THIS FILM ON HAND FOR LOW LIGHT AND ACTION PICS.
