Strength:

Solid, well constructed, easy to use.

Weakness:

Noisy, nowadays, not so much 11 years ago.

I´ve owned this camera for the last 11 year, without a single problem, although shooting with it in rainy days, travelling along the Sahara, or fishing in the middle of the sea (very agressive environments). Compared with the new Nikons, it´s rather noisy, and not so fast AF, but the precision of the metering, the mechanical strength, the well balanced flash for emergency situations (if not, use the SB range), the easy and intuitive way to use it and the complete control of it, readily accessible, makes it one of my favourites.

I know that in the worsts moments, my 6006 won´t deceive me.

Strength:

Build Quality, this camera has taken some serious drops and dirt in the field and has never let me down.

Weakness:

Overpriced.
Outdated features.
Noisy Autofocus.
Not enough features for even the serious beginner.
Autofocus can tend to hunt around sometimes.

I am not sure who Nikon has targeted this camera at. I bought one while starting out in photography due to the suggestion from a friend who was in photography school. This camera was a big mistake and a waste of money. It does not have essential features needed for outdoor and close-up photography like depth of field preview and mirror lock-up.It also is not capable of multiple exposures. Thus it is not a sufficient camera for even a beginner photographer as you will soon find it is hard to get good results and be creative without these features.

Strength:

Many useful and at the price unique features.
Graet built-in flash compared to other cameras of the same date.
VERY good exposure system, including six-field matrix/evaluative, spot & classic Nikon center weighted.
Great value if NOT intended for sports, moving people, or other action.
A good camera too learn photography´s grounds with, especially if one wants to keep it when upgrading in the "Nikon hierarchy".
Meters with manual Nikkors (although not matrix)
Great flash performance, even lacking "D-compatibility".
Not so heavy on batteries if you let the flash rest...but you won´t, as it is so useful for different lightning(?) situations...

Weakness:

Somewhat complicated handling if one wants to use all features.
No DOF preview.
Auto focus not at all up to todays (or even 1991´s...) standard.Works but hunts & doesn´t always lock-on surely.
Uses CR223 batteries, and takes some energy, something like 8-12 rolls/battery , if I remember correctly.

A good performer exposure wise, having both spot & reliable matrix metering coupled with a built-in flash with exposure compensation easily performed, when you first get learnt how to use it...
I didn´t like the AF-system though. I think from F-801S and newer, Nikon got to grips with that thing...
As a beginners Nikon camera, and as a backup with GOOD metering this one i s a gem, but NOT for action if you´re not very good at performing manual-focus.
And, it HAS a very clear viewfinder, and a metal lensmount.
Pretty much a little workhorse.
Read the manual thouroughly, and it will give some nice results if used within the mentioned "frame".
Rating made compared to similarly priced (at the time they were new) cameras.

Strength:

Lots of good features. Nikon quality. Good price. Takes manual focus lenses.

Weakness:

Auto focus slow by today's standards.

Better Nikons available, but a used one is a great second body, especially if you have some manual focus lenses. Also good if you're on a tight budget instead of an N65 which has fewer features.

Strength:

Lots of features for the money I spent.

Weakness:

None!

Compared to N90, N6006 has bracketing, flash compesation built-in. One draw back is slow in AF and quite noisy in winding and firing shutter. Other than that, it is great. I've been using it for 4 years until I traded it for N90S, I still miss it! Great beginner camera as well as intermediate.

Customer Service

Not applicable to me since I'd never called Nikon USA.

Strength:

Well made and easy to use. Lots of nice flash feature controls built right into the camera.

Weakness:

AF is slow for todays cameras and it is a little loud, but that is only a problem if you are shooting wildlife or you're a spy.

This is one of the best cameras that Nikon has ever made. They still make it!

Strength:

Small, inexpensive, feature-laden. Has a terrific metering system (matrix / centre-weighted / spot). It meters with manual-focus Nikkors (AI/AI'd or better) - you lose matrix metering but that's okay. (The F60 / N60 and F50 / N50 do not allow metering with manual-focus optics.)

Weakness:

It works great but it's loud and the AF is slow and can tend to hunt. This would be a poor choice for action photography.

A great camera for a great price. It would make a nice backup body for someone with a more capable Nikon, or a great starter camera.

Strength:

The camera has a very solid feel and is easy to operate. I have found the camera to be quite reliable. The included flash functions are a very nice bonus indeed. I also like the fact that it accepts a cheap mechanical cable release.

Weakness:

Occasionally, mine would fail to load a roll (happened only with Fuji Sensia). When shooting sports, the small AF sensor is limiting and the camera can start to hunt. The camera is also quite noisy.

This camera offers great value for money. Technically, the F70 (N70) is more advanced, but a (used) F601 (N6006) will still be a great choice. The F601 does not feature DoF, MLU or ME, nor can you use AA-batteries. But for me, it has done its job for more than five years, and it has done so very well.

Strength:

I liked look and feel. Control are mostly easy to use except a couple of
tiny buttons. The best part is it worked with manual and AF nikon lenses.

Weakness:

Reliability was poor. AF quit focusing
properly. Control Dial stoped working also. Multiple trips to Nikon factory.
It is also noisy and slow. Changed it for N70. Much better camera, but controls take time to get used to.
Memory presets are great.

I would recommend buying N70 or N90s. It does not cost much more (~$50). If you like N6006 design try N8008S instead. You can find great deals on those now. If you dont needall the gagets buy a used FM2.

Customer Service

GeneraLly good, but expensive.
