Strength:

Outstanding image quality in it''s class. Change ISO instantly. D30 & 550EX flash combination is really good! Uses Canon IS lenses. Battery grip is nice! Too many great features to list.

Weakness:

Auto-focus is a bit frustrating. Canons software is not multi-task friendly & slow!!!

I swore I wouldn''t take the plunge into digital until the 6 mega-pixel range was a reality. But after getting a few developing bills I figured what the heck. I decided to use it on one job instead of my 35mm (in conjunction with my medium format). I haven''t used my 35mm since. The first images were stunning. Most require minor color tweaking in Photoshop, but the output on my Fuji Pictrography 3000 is incredible! With a one gig Microdrive I can shoot 281 RAW files before down-loading. The auto-focusing is slow, but you can work around it. This body may be a bit pricey for someone who won''t be making a living with it, but it is one of the best tools I''ve purchased in many, many years! I''ll have very little hesitation buying whatever Canon replaces the D30 with. One last thing, I had never picked one up or looked at one before opening the box, but the first feel of this camera was superlative. Reminded me of the first time I held a Leica.

Strength:

Canon EF glass can be used. Very high quality images.

Weakness:

No spot metering, Autofocus slow, View finder not very clear, for truly Pro needs to be a bit more rugged and FPS needs to be faster (Not a problem for me however). Sensor size means it''s very difficult to use Wide Angle -- even 14 MM lens only works as around 20 MM but 300 works as 420MM.

I was very sceptical of digital but after just trying this camera for a few days I was hooked. For outdoor photography it''s perfect. With ther right software, printing and processing you can get 20 X 32''s as good as provia film. I don''t use my EOS1v very much any more. The weaknesses I mention later can all be got around by changing your technique. This camera wasn''t marketed as a pro camera but many many pros use it in their daily work.

Strength:

digital SLR, Canon lenses, price better than the D1, USB interface

Weakness:

price, feels breakable compared to the D1, lens not included

This is a LOT of camera for someone just getting into the hobby, but I'm extremely happy with it all around.

Strength:

- Picture quality is great!
- Colours are great!
- Long exposure shots are perfect!
- Flash metering with 550EX flash is perfect
- Uses Canon EF lenses
- The handling is easy
- EOS users feel at home right away
- Has a good quality feel to it

Weakness:

The CMOS sensor is smaller than regular film. My 17-35L becomes a 27-55.
I miss the extreme wide angle a bit.

I really like this camera. It's a bit expensive, but there are no other alternatives.

Strength:

Wow so many to chose from. GREAT resolution on images. Increased focal length on my 35-350 to 560 on the long end!

Weakness:

NO SPOT METER!!!
Slow shutter sinc at 200
Slow frame advance. Not pro spec were seals are concerned. $$$$$$$$
Unable to get super wide effects due to focal length x 1.6

The first digital I could justify buying due to the marginally resonable cost. My love for this camera is more based on the digital aspects as opposed to it's merits as a slr.

Customer Service

Never knock wood.

Strength:

Great! Nice all around digital camera.
Just as suspected from Canon. Very good software included.

Weakness:

None to speak of. Did have to go from a 35-135 lens to a 24-85 lens to get a wider angle of view.

I love it. A great camera for the price.

Strength:

Excellent image quality with strong color and very smooth tonal transitions. Lightweight, fast, controls are well organized, effectively no shutter lag. This camera has replaced film for me and that really says volumes. I really love it.

Weakness:

Body construction is fairly solid but a couple body panels have a creaky fit (on my unit). From what I hear, this isn't widespread. The camera is not a true pro unit and thus is not designed to be weather-proof. I haven't run into any problems but would love an EOS1-esque body surrounding this sensor. Others have complained of slowish autofocus (compared to pro SLRs) but with the 2.8 L I've had no focus problems at all.

In it's price range, it has no competition right now. Moreover, I prefer it's overall image quality to that of the S1 or D1. To me, this is the first somewhat affordable digital SLR which has the subtlety and smoothness of a film camera.

Contrary to what some have said on the net, this camera (despite it's modest resolution) is sensitive to lens quality and "L" lenses make a noticeable difference in the file quality. I've been very happy with the 20-35 2.8L as a general lens and am about to pick up a Tokina 28-70 2.6/2.8 Pro which seems to have gotten rave reviews. (If I were made of money, I'd get the Canon 28-70 L) I found the 24-85 Canon EF to be very dissapointing on this camera but I may have tried a bad example of the lens.

Strength:

Because most of my work is done throughout the world's crises zones (Kosovo, Bosnia, Chechnya, the West Bank), having a means to produce publishable images without film is the greatest thing to happen to this profession since the advent of the SLR. This camera gives someone like me everything I could ever want. Tack sharp images. Great flash support. Dynamite software. Ergonomics that are out of this world. Ease of use that other cameras are going to find tough to beat.

Weakness:

Sometimes slow autofocus.

A camera whose time has finally come.

Strength:

Perfect exposure. Great ergos.

Weakness:

AutoFocus is terrible.

1.) The digital factor of being able to see your image in 1 second is very addicting.

2.) The AutoFocus on this camera is so bad, I returned it. (although I do shoot a lot of very low light settings)

3.) If Canon comes out with a digital version of the 1v, I'll be the first in line to buy it.

Strength:

Excellent image quality, very fast and sharp focusing when used with the "L" series USM lens, feels great with the optional battery grip, great image quality even at 1600 ISO, built-in flash works very well. Better value than Nikon D1.

Weakness:

Thee focusing points, versus 6-7 on other Canon gear, cheap camera strap.

For those who don't need to beat their gear up on a regular basis, the Canon D30 sets the new high mark for professional quality digital cameras. My Dad owns a Nikon D1 and now wishes he waited...enough said?

Customer Service

In years past their service on my two T-90's was excellent
