Weakness:
very few..maybe the little slow AF but then Go manual no probs! IF You have lot of time on an ansigment and still need a Digital file for your local newspaper or whatever your client is,then buy this DSLR with no hesitation, although you will need some work in photoshop compared to the newest DSLRs youre one the right way! Its still far far better than any of the NEW 8 Billion Pix rangerfinderdigicameras because the flexibility and workresult youll get from this D30 is so much better in any areas ! SO conclusion>as a PRO back up og photo student camera or just and very serious amateurs going SLR THIS IS IT. The 3 mill sensor IS ALL you need for super PRO prints! BUY IT. All the above
Weakness:
So so AF speed in low light - though better than many amateur film SLRs that I have used Great value for money (about US$600-650 in the used market) Great prints upto A4 size (I have'nt tried larger prints so far). 'Silky smooth', Noiseless images at ISO100 and very acceptable noise upto ISO400 in reasonable light. Uses less storage space - (more than 130 RAW images on a 512MB CF card) Custom functions allow more flexibility in shooting. Good build quality. Far superior to any 'Prosumer' digital camera I have used in terms of image quality and SLR feel. If you don't intend to print over A4 size photos, this might be the best bargain out there - at least for now. Keep away from the mad rush for more megapixels! |

Strength:
The camera is very sharp and easy to use. I use it much like I did with my medium format. I can preview the image like I did with Polaroid and I can't use hot shoe flash with it. I upload the images on my Mac and can make adjustments to the image without wasting time and money like with film. I have made lots of money with it. 8x10 prints at 300ppi are outstanding! Much better than 35mm film. I also do like the parameter settings for higher and lower contract lighting .....much like pushing or pulling slide film....but at the same ISO setting., Also, the colors are wonderful....much better than any CCD chip I have seen so far.
Weakness:
I have had two of these cameras, one smashed when I dropped it off my shoulder with my 300mm f2.8 L lens attached to it....and destroyed the camera but saved the lens. The other one which I have owned for a year now has developed a problem where it will shut down unexpectedly....often during the beginning of operation... I find that the hot shoe is malfunctioning ....it is loose and only fires a full power burst from my new 550ex flash.....as well as my 540's . The autofocus is dog slow as mentioned by everyone before....but I have captured some awesome shots with it., On my website, most of the pictures with the copyright from 2002 and 2003 (as of the time I am writing this) were taken by that camera. The vertical grip shutter release sticks and the shutter lag time is a major factor when shooting sports not to mention that I have trouble manually focusing because the screen is too soft. I often get out of focus images that looked sharp in the 9 segment magnifier. The AF is not as accurate as an A2 body and much worse than a 1n.....even with fast L lenses like 135mm f2....and 300mm f2.8 For the record, I shoot more than just people. http://www.onemodelplace.com/photographer_list.cfm?P_ID=6108 Customer Service Well, I am in a position where I can't get it serviced because I use it all the time for model portfolio work as well as commercial work. Strength:
Stunning image Quality with "L" Lenses Batteries last a very long time Excellent body design/EOS line
Weakness:
Auto focus is a little weak compared to other Canon Pro cameras Sensitive to quality of lenses used I''ll have to say that I''ve been stunned by the image quality from the D30. The images are vibrant, and as noise-free as anything I''ve ever seen from a digital camera. Accurate color and tonality make for some fantastic shots. After shooting with this camera, I dumped all my Nikon 35mm film gear and spent $6000 on all new Canon lenses and gear to get me started. After looking at photos from much higher megapixel cameras including the top of the line Nikon D1 and Canon EOS 1D digital cameras, I''m convinced the D30 produces the best image quality in the industry right now. Simply stunning. Customer Service None yet. Upgraded firmware via download from Canon Web - simple upgrade. Similar Products Used: 17-35LUSM, 28-135ISUSM, 50 1.4USM, 550EX, 80-200 2.8L USM/IS |

Strength:
Convenience of digital. Compatibility with all my EOS lenses and accessories (well most of them any way). Great colour balance, especially skin tones. Excellent colour saturation.
Weakness:
Metering is not as reliable as my EOS 1V. SLOW focus. Uses EX series flashes only. My 1.4 extender doesn''t behave on this camera body. Overall, I am pleased with the D30. Quality is adequate for my needs. Savings on film and developing are incredible. I had hoped for better shooting performance, but hey, technology just gets better all the time any way. |

Strength:
Digital - no film or processing cost 1.6x extender Battery life ISO changed at a push of a button Flash Velvia colour at ISO 400
Weakness:
AF is very poor no AF with 1.4x extender Small buffer Digital is fantastic and the D30 has many excellent attributes. I have had the camera for approx 3 months and have taken around 3300 images. If I had shot film this would be approx 90 rolls and at £10 GBP per roll including dev+mount this has already saved £900 GBP. I use the camera in fine jpeg mode and find the image quality to be fine. The RAW setting is slightly better but at only 33 images to a 128mb CF card as opposed to 90 it not that much better. The ability to change ISO between shots is fantastic. What in the past would have involved having 5 bodies all loaded with different ISO films can now be achieved in a single body. The 1.6x multiplier is for me the best feature of the body. I hardly ever use a wide lens mainly shooting wildlife and this body converts my 100-400 IS into a 160-640 IS f5.6. Also my 200mm f2.8 becomes a 320mm f2.8. I know that the image quality is not up to the 300mm L 2.8 but as that lens costs £4500 GBP and the 200mm 2.8 is about £600 GBP. Again I can live with the slight reduction in quality. Battery life is also very good taking about 400 shots to a charge. The colour of the images from the CMOS chip is very nice. It''s like having Velvia film at 400 ISO However for a camera that costs 1700 GBP the autofocus is very poor. The system seems the same as the one in the EOS 50 which was good in 1995 but by 2000 technology had advanced and for £1700 GBP I would expect EOS 3 AF performance. The AF sensor is also not good enough to allow f5.6 lenses to AF with the Canon 1.4 converter. The battery grip is very good and improves the feel of the body but is a bit overpriced at £150. In terms of flash the 550ex is very good and with digital you can play with different settings like wireless and strobe and see the results instantly. Note the off camera flash cord that comes in 3 seperate bits will not work with the D30. Also worth noting that the amount of jpeg shots that will fit on a card decreases as the ISO increaases. 94 shots ISO 100, 64 shots ISO 1600 on a 128mb CF. The buffer is also not really big enough as I have missed shots due to busy appearing in the viewfinder as the camera writes to the CF card. I also had problems with microdrives so I would suggest standard CF cards. I have a few test images which I will upload to www.amateurphotography.co.uk in the next couple of days Customer Service Not used Similar Products Used: EOS 3 - A far more professional body Mikon D1 - A far more professional body |

Strength:
* Unbeatable image quality (even at HQ JPG setting) * Digital noise is virtually nonexistent to 800ISO * Battery life is excellent
Weakness:
* Image is a bit soft directly out of the camera (easily corrected with unsharp mask filter) * Slight shutter release delay (when using some auto features) * Don''t care much for the transfer/viewing software Great Camera! Fantastic image quality! Best camera body purchase I have made to date. I highly doubt that I will ever go back to film - Too many advantages with the high-end digital technologies, and it''s only getting better! My main use for this camera is youth soccer action. I have made prints as large as 18x24@80ppi and they look fantastic (oversized HP inkjet @ Kinkos). In case you are waiting for the higher resolution chips and newer technologies, consider this: I can easily upsample the images to 2000x3000 (6mp!) in photoshop with no visible loss in quality what so ever - they are just larger! This fact alone saved me $2700! Highly recommended!! Customer Service Not needed Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
THE 1.6X MAGNIFICATION OF ANY LENS TURNS REGULAR ZOOM LENSES INTO SUPER ZOOMS. I HAVE A 35-350MM WHICH IS A 56-560MM WITH THE D30. IMAGE QUALITY AND COLOR IS OUTSTANDING. I USED TO SHOOT ALL E-6, AND THEN HAVE THEM SCANNED. THE QUALITY IS JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER. THERE IS VERY LITTLE NOISE UNTIL YOU GET UP TO 1600 ISO. ALL OF MY EOS EQUIPMENT IS COMPATABLE. I SHOOT A LOT OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, AND I AM ABLE TO SHOOT HIGH RES JPEG''S (1 MB), NOT TIF FILES (4 MB), AND THERE IS VERY LITTLE LOSS OF QUALITY. BATTERY LIFE IS EXCELLENT, BUT I HAVE YET TO SHOOT IN VERY COLD CONDITIONS. OVERALL, THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING CAMERA.
Weakness:
THERE ARE JUST A FEW WEAKNESS. THE SHUTTER HAS A BIT OF A DELAY, WHICH MAKES FAST ACTION SPORTS A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT. YOU HAVE TO GET USED TO HITTING THE SHUTTER A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE YOU NEED A SHOT. THE 3 FRAMES PER SECOND ARE A LITTLE SLOW TOO. THE AUTOFOCUS IS ON THE SLOW END TOO, BUT USING USM/L LENSES HELPS. THE DRAWBACK TO HAVING A 1.6X MAGNIFICATION IS TRYING TO SHOOT ULTRA WIDE ANGLES. MY 17-35MM LENS IS NOW A 27-56. MOST OF THESE PROBLEMS ARE TAKEN CARE OF WITH THE NEW 1D, WHICH IS MORE THAN TWICE AS MUCH. EVEN WITH THESE WEAKNESSES, THIS IS STILL AN EXCELLENT CAMERA FOR THE MONEY. MUCH BETTER THAN CONVERTING TO NIKON EQUIPMENT FOR THE D1. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING CAMERA FOR THE MONEY. FINALLY THERE IS A PROFESSIONAL QUALITY DIGITAL SLR THAT IS WITHIN THE REACH OF EVERYBODY. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE AN EOS SYSTEM, AND WANT TO GO DIGITAL, THIS IS PERFECT CAMERA FOR YOU. EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT AS FAST AS THE NIKON D1 FOR SPORTS, I USE IT TO SHOOT PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL, AND I CAN GET ALL OF THE SAME SHOTS.
