Strength:
Well constructed and totally bullet proof even after 8 years of use.
Weakness:
Just old tech but perfectly usable A cracking lens and pro-body build make this old timer a real steal on Ebay. The small outlay belies the highl quality of this camera which originally sold for well over USD1300. Do not be put off by the 4MP sensor as the print quality rivals anything around right up to 10 x 8's. But no cropping please! It focusses very accurately and is fast enough even by todays exacting standards. Write speeds are appalling and as most reviewers note this old boy is very power hungry. I now use Saiyo 4000mAh

Strength:
Strong build that feels like a real SLR camera, Fast f 2 to 2.4 zoom Olympus lens, that covers a very usefull range (35 to 140, in 35mm equivallent), 4 megapixels, and the built in flash works well for what it is.
Weakness:
Focus could be faster, but I''''''''''''''''ll deal with it. This camera is very proficient at what it was designed for, namely, digital photography aimed at professionals. I''''''''''''''''ve been shooting photos of live bands, using both existing stage lighting and flash. The fact that this camera has a very fast lens doesn''''''''''''''''t hurt either. So far, I''''''''''''''''ve been happy with the results. In fact, one of the bands is going to use a couple of my shots taken with the E-10 on their website. Focus isn''''''''''''''''t real fast, but it is accurate. All in all, I''''''''''''''''d have to say that I''''''''''''''''m pleased with this camera. Customer Service No experience yet. Strength:
The E-10 has the look and feel of a 35mm and enough flexibility to produce quality images under almost any condition.
Weakness:
The accessories for extending the focal length of the fixed lense are expensive. I am very impressed by the E-10. It exceeded my expectations and more than rivals my 35mm in both flexibility and function. I have had some difficulties in learning to use the camera. Both the autofocus and metering have proved more difficult to use than I expected, although now after a couple of months of use I feel that I am producing more consistent photos. My concerns about noise and dead pixels as reported in numerous posting and articles turned out to unfounded. After comparing this with the more expensive digital SLRs, the E-10 was the best choice. The bottom line is that I would recommend this camera to any one looking to go digital. Similar Products Used: Afga 780 Olympus C3000 Hassebald Pentax SP |

Strength:
Excellant overall image quality and resolution. The prints rival or exceed that of conventional 35mm film. Good color. Nice ergonomics and design. Feels solid. A great overall tool that is capable of handling many situations in the studio.
Weakness:
Lack of an interchangeable lens system seriously limits creative potential for landscape and sports photography. Shutter speed will be a major issue for most sports and wildlife photographers. Often significant spotty noise in shadow details and blue skies. Some visible artifacts even in RAW and TIFF. Out of the 5 or so digital cameras I have worked with the E-10 is the worse in terms of battery life. Olympus needs to address this issue. Although I am primarily a Wildlife/Landscape photographer I have had the chance to use the E-10 to shoot a couple weddings on the side. The clients have been very pleased with the results(which is what counts). I have been experimenting with digital for the past year and the E-10 has been a nice addition to my collection of cameras. Although I think it is a stretch for some to compare the output of the E-10(or any other digital camera) to medium format I do believe that digital is quickly catching up with 35mm in terms of overall capability. I have been able to acheive results that meet or exceed those from 35mm using the E-10. That being said I think it also needs to be noted that the E-10 although quite capable for portraiture work and in the studio it is severely lacking as a camera for outdoor, sports, and landscape work. The fixed lens system and camera specs seriously limit your creative capability for most landscape and nature work. Serious landscape photography would often call for arpertures 2-3 times as small as that affored by the E-10. Also a 1/680 shutter speed and limited ISO options just wont cut it in the field in many situations. I would say if you could afford it a camera with an interchangeable lens system would be a much better choice for a professional but the E-10 is the next best thing. It certainly can be used as a professional tool in the studio and for portrait and fine art work. As a Studio camera I give it a 4.5. Strength:
It seems suprisingly durable. It gives me an 11 mb image, which is fine for most publications. it is compact, quiet and unobtrusive which I find a very nice combonation. The white balance is impressive, and easy to use. Fast lenses can''t be beat at this price, nice color too. The macro feature is a nice plus.
Weakness:
This thing is a pig, a genuine power hog. I am trying a bantam battery for the moment, because the price of the ni-mh battery grip they offer is criminal. I take a lot of pics, when I use it and do not expect it to fail because of power issues. Considering the power problems I have experienced, they should have built the optional grip in as a standard feature. Also, the auto focusing is a little rough, and correcting it manually is very hard. Some sort of manual focusing help would be nice in the next model. The power issue is the main reason for lower ratings. A camera making a file this size needs some juice, and lots of it! They should have thought that through. I purchased this camera to use on the job instead of my D-1 Nikons in certain situations where I cannot carry a lot of gear, or do not want to, for various reasons. I did not need any software, and figured out the camera pretty quickly. I use 2 -224 MB cards and photomechanicpro to edit the files, photoshop to finish the images. I have never liked smart media. It has been mountain biking , frozen, and at 100 degrees in a car trunk, but always packed well. It gets a worked hard, as any good tool should. Customer Service no need yet......... Strength:
Great handling, sturdy construction, bright viewfinder, nice F2 lens, great pixel dimensions
Weakness:
Image quality is poor due to excessive noise even in bright light conditions and low ISO options. If you're tired of the plastic, cheap feeling digital cams out there and want a digital camera that looks and feels like a REAL FILM CAMERA. You couldn't do better if you have only 2k to spend. It's a enjoyable camera to use and has some nice features. How ever if image quality is a top priority - I'd recommend the Nikon coolpix 990. Or if you can swing it - I'd spend 1500.00 more for the Canon D30 or Fuji S1 which have vastly superior image quality... isn't that what it's all about? Customer Service Dunno I never used it. Strength:
high resolution
Weakness:
performance of camera electronics in the cold. Excellent pictures at high pixel count, but handles slowly due to focusing system, slow read-write (when 4 shot buffer filled), and bulky. Canon G1 handles better, has a better battery, and has similar image quality, at half the price. The Canon D30 has more film-like image, superbly accurate color and is a joy to use. The E10 fits neatly between these in cost, and offers SLR and longer zoom than the cheaper alternative. My camera, and one other I've used, show empty battery when camera is cold (even with warm battery); requires turning the camera on and off to get it to show a charge and take a few pictures. Then the problem recurs until the camera warms up. I suspect that this is limited to a small run rather than an energy management problem. Customer Service Olympus requires defective E10s to be sent back to them rather than dealer. Similar Products Used: Canon D30 - also own |
