Film photographers – we’ve got film news today! It’s not a new emulsion or anything like that. But we don’t get a lot of film-related announcements these days so I like to make a big deal of it when something new does come along. Kodak just announced they’ll be making Ektar 100 negative film in 4×5 and 8×10 sheets. This opens up a new film option for fine art and commercial photographers who need high-resolution images and like the predictable look and simple workflow of film.
Kodak’s decision to make Ektar 100 in large format sheet form may have something to do with recent “medium format” digital camera announcements by Hasselblad, Leica, Leaf, etc. I can’t help thinking that some photographers who might be considering these very expensive, high-resolution cameras – would prefer to use film. For some photographers there’s marketing value in using film, plus film has a known look and a simpler workflow. For the right photographer and the right job, large format negative film will make a lot of sense.
