Our friend, photographer Bob Scott, visited the Canon booth at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York, last month. He got to take a close-up, hands-on look at Canon’s latest flagship camera, the EOS-1D Mark IV. The new 1D is a 16-megapixel professional digital SLR built for speed. It has an updated auto focus system, 10 frames per second burst-rate and it now also features 1080p HD video, Below you’ll find Bob’s hands-on (sort-of) preview of the new Canon EOS-1D Mark IV.

What was there in this presentation that I couldn’t have learned by reading the spec sheet?
As for the ISO 102,400 — how noisy is it? Bob had nothing to say about that. And if I were shooting weddings (the last time I did was 36 years ago), I’d want a full-frame camera.

I don’t think anyone is really in a position to comment on the 1D’s high ISO noise yet. The camera Bob got to play with at the PhotoPlus Expo wasn’t a production unit so he wasn’t able to make any sample photos. When we get a production camera we’ll shoot studio tests and post them at full resolution so you can make comparisons. But I wouldn’t get my hopes up for useable image quality at ISO 102,400. That’s pretty much an emergency setting or one that Canon put on the camera so they can say they did it.
