SD Memory Card News
The biggest surprise of the show – for me at least – was SD memory card compatibility for Olympus and Sony point-and-shoot cameras. Olympus has doggedly resisted the SD memory card format in favor of their proprietary xD Picture Cards. Similarly, Sony has been pushing the Memory Stick format. But as of this spring, it looks like all new Olympus and Sony point-and-shoots will be able to handle SD and SDHC memory cards. The new Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot cameras have a new card slot that can accommodate both SD cards and Sony MemoryStick media.
In other SD memory card news, Panasonic announced a 64GB SDXC memory card at CES (Panasonic SDXC announcement). The SDXC memory card format (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) was announced at the 2009 CES show. It’s spec’d with a maximum capacity of 2TB – that’s right – two terabytes. Panasonic is the second company to announce an SDXC memory card – Toshiba is also supposed to have a 64GB SDXC card available this spring. For more on the SDXC memory format, read the SDXC announcement article from last year’s CES tradeshow.
New Canon 70-200mm L Pro Lens
Traditionally, pro camera gear announcements have been made at PMA, not CES. However, Canon decided not to attend the 2010 PMA tradeshow so they announced an updated version of their 70-200mm pro zoom lens at CES. The new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II zoom lens has improved optics, improved auto focus and improved image stabilization. Sports photographers and photojournalists should be really excited about this new lens.
Polaroid News For The Artsy Fartsy Crowd
Toy camera and art photographers will be excited to learn that there is a new Polaroid instant camera. Actually there are two – the Polaroid PIC 1000 and the Polaroid 3″x4″ Instant Digital Camera, a 12-megapixel digital camera with a built-in printer (Polaroid cameras announcement). It’s the PIC 1000 that we’re interested in here, though. It’s a remake of the classic Polaroid OneStep instant camera and it uses Polaroid Color 600 Instant Film for that classic Polaroid look. Those who are interested in classic Polaroid cameras and film should check out The Impossible Project.
Conclusion
That’s it for our 2010 CES tradeshow camera highlights. Feel free to add your own thoughts on CES camera announcements and photography trends in the comments section of this article. Since we weren’t able to actually be at the show, it wouldn’t be a total surprise if we missed something and we welcome your additions. We will be at the annual PMA (Photo Marketing Association) tradeshow next month, though. So keep your eyes open for pre-PMA product announcements and make sure to check back for our live PMA show coverage.
