J 250 Double Tilt head
Strength:
Easy to use, no thought required. Bubble level included in design makes leveling tripod easy.
Weakness:
It is a little heavy but that is to be expected. Best head I've found for my type of photography, mainly large format out in the field. Great paired with a Ries tripod (my favorite combination). Customer Service Never had problems that needed service but when I called them, I received excellent customer service. Strength:
Absolutely rock solid. Holds my 8x10 with nary a wimper. I couldn't ask for a better head for large format.
Weakness:
Sometimes (in the cold especially), it's hard to tighten the camera mounting screw enough to completely lock the camera down, though this has rarely been an issue. Also, the layered metal pieces that make up the fore/aft tilt mechanism seem a little vulnerable- dropped my tripod once and bent it all out of shape. A fantastic tripod head. Works best when perched on top of a Ries tripod. Try to find one used, as a new one will hurt your wallet plenty. That said, if I ever have to replace mine, I think I'd pay the price of a new one because I like it so much. Bottom line is this- God's gift to LF shooters! Customer Service only dealt with the people at Ries once to order a second camera mounting screw of a different size. They were friendly and seemed eager to help.
