Strength:

Lightweight 58mm filter thread = cheaper quality filters small size compared to f/1.9 N version

Weakness:

None for the price (mine came as part of a 645 Pro TL SV kit in any case!)

It's a superb performer and I wouldn't sell it even though I've since acquired the gorgeous 80 f/1.9 N: I keep the f/2.8 N version hooked up to an AET-2 for close-up shots.

Strength:

small, light, super sharp, fast, great lens hood

Weakness:

difficult to use with cokin filter system and cable release, try it and find out for yourself

This is one of the sharpest lenses I have used. It can't be beat. When I use slow emulion slide films, it is unreal.

Strength:

Great standard lens. The optics are world-class and give true professional results (great sharpness, contrast, and color). Great construction too: focus ring is well-dampened and smooth, "feels" like a professional lens in your hand. Excellent lens hood included.

Weakness:

Can't really say it has one.

I love this lens. The photos that I've taken with this lens have made me develop a deeper passion for medium format photography. I recommend it to any beginner or anybody who would love to get into medium format photography. This lens comes standard with a Mamiya 645E camera body. Great camera to begin with or for backup. I've taken the camera to the Highlands in Scotland and I am overjoyed with my photos. Looking forward to my future photos from this lens.

Strength:

Excellant sharpness
No distortion to speak of

Weakness:

Price (as with all MF equipment), but a lot cheaper than many other MF lenses.

A very professional lens. This lens is the best I've seen, ever. It's manual focus lens so no autofocus to critique. I tried it all all aperatures and with all types of subjects, and haven't seen any distortion at all (a far cry from many others I've used, including lenses by Nikon). The sharpness also seems to be excellant (I say 'seems' because all MF film and prints will seem sharp by comparison to 35mm, but even then, this lens appears to be really outstanding).

A bit soft on 2.8, but from 5.6 it`s sharp.

Strength:

Very sharp photos, lightweght, easy focusing, depth of field preview

Weakness:

slightly soft at 2.8, but sharp from 4.0 and less. No half stop clicks for aperature settings.

I bought this lens used along with a Pro-tl body. My first real medium format system & lens. I'm very happy with it. I wish it had half stop aperature clicks like Bronica, but you can position it in between and get intermediate settings. I like the option of using leaf lenses or inexpensive non-leaf lenses.

Customer Service

not needed, but Mamiya has excellent website with user forum

Strength:

Sharp, light, IR focus markings. Extremely useful all around lens

Weakness:

None that I can see

If you could only buy one lens for a body, buy this one and you can do about anything. Sharp enough for any application I would use it for.

Strength:

++++ extremely sharp @ f5.6- f22
++++ easy to read dept of field
+++ smooth focusing

Weakness:

--- somewhat too light
--construction feels like plastic
-not as sharp at f2.8-f4; but has good bokeh(blured background)

Bought this second hand on e-bay, and it was relatively new. The construction was somewhat light when compared to 35mm standard lens, refering to my Leica Summilux M/R and Nikon AI/AFD; but that's another format so I am not going there.

The sharpness was somewhat a desppointment @ f2.8-f4. I closely compared my 30year old Rolleiflex 2.8F TLR with it and my Rollei won hands down. This was evident when the lens was set on f2.8-f4; but, when set to f5.6-f22 I couldn't hardly tell the difference. The only thing noticeable was the contrast; the Rollieflex has increadible contrast.

The big plus about the Mamiya is it's affordability and the fact that it's a system. This lens can interchange with my Mamiya ProTL to my old Mamiya M645. A big plus. I can't even change the lens on my Rolleiflex.

p.s.
- always use a Lens Hood!!
- if not using a tripod; use iso 400 film (especially when you set it to f5.6-22)
