Strength:

-Great shaprness, color saturation and wide zoom range
-Light, small and water resisitant
-The best lens in the Vectis line

Weakness:

-Tied to a dead system
-APS only

I was totally blown away with the quality of this lens. Having used different 35mm SLR systems, I got the Vectis S-1 just for light travel use and with 100 ASA film I was very impressed. I got this lens for a trip as I wanted some long reach (100-300 in 35mm format) . I took shots of landscapes and whales in the ocean that were just so crisp and sharp, it was the match of any 35mm APO zoom lens. Don't let this small and light plastic lens fool you, it is NOT a cheap lens: it delivers sharp, rich and crisp images. The key to good quality is twofold: you must use ASA 100 as 200 and 400 is too grainy AND you must find a good developer or the prints will not deliver on the quality of this lens. Fantastic buy that makes APS-C a viable alternative to 35.

Strength:

Very sharp images for a zoom. Lightweight of course.

Weakness:

Manual focussing through electic coupling.

As an Vectis system lens, you can't beat the light weight. Lens hood is included, and the bayonet mount works well. With any lens, the proof is in the pictures and this lens has produced very sharp images for me; seem to be a bit better than the 22-80. As with all S1 lenses, the manual focussing is an electric coupling to motor in lens. Sensitive to rate of turning- which is a nice feature once you understand it. Not a bad system, but takes getting used to. Also, my lens "squeeked" a bit at first when zoomed, but that went away as the lubricant worked in I assume. I just wish Minolta had put depth of field preview on the lens; how hard can that be with electic stop down?

Strength:

Small, light weight and optically excellent

Weakness:

I forget that I really cannot hand hold this lens at 1/20th at the 240mm end - that f5.6 aperture can be limiting.

A great little lens equivalent to 100-300mm in the 35mm format. Uses anomalous low dispersions glass and this is reflected in the quality of the images it makes. Drops in your pocket and you can forget it is there. Makes a good companion to the 22-80mm.

If only it were image stabilised...

Manual Focus

Weakness:

AF Hunts alot

With the Vectis system, you don't have many choices, and since this was my first SLR purchase, I don't really have anything to compare it to. I was happy with the results it gave me. i am writing in the past tense becuase I have sold all of my Vectis equipment. I purchased it cheap (it was factory refurbished) so I can't complain. I think I got what I paid for
