Tokina AF 193 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 35mm Zoom

Tokina AF 193 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

This lens replaces the AF235 II (20-35mm f/3.5-4.5) in Tokina's quality middle line of AF series lenses. The AF193 is constructed with high refraction, low dispersion (HLD) glass and multicoated lens elements produced by Hoya Corporation, the world's largest manufacturer of optical glass. While using the same mechanical design as the AF235 II, the AF193 has barrels made from black poly carbonate to reduce the overall weight of the lens, making it more convenient for photographers to carry while traveling, hiking or engaged in other activities where encumbrance is an issue.

Strength:

--Good value for the price
--a great one-lens wideangle
--Fairly light and compact

Weakness:

--Aperture ring needs a more gripable finish
--Lens hood must be removed to use built-in flash

I bought this lens to travel as light as possible during a two-week European trip (my other lens was a Nikon 70-300mm). I used it on a Nikon F70 camera shooting Provia 100F. I shot at all apertures, and had no problems with flare. All my slides look and project fine. The Nikon 17-35mm might take sharper photos if you look through a 16X loupe, but for snapshots the Tokina worked fine. The focus ring isn't quite as smooth as the zoom ring, but I suspect most who buy this lens will use it in autofocus mode, as I did on all my shots. The one thing I'd do differently would be to use a UV filter for lens protection instead of the lens shade Tokina offers for this lens. Like most contour lens shades, it's a major annoyance to use. Since these things snag on everything, it often got knocked off when taking the camera out of the bag or putting it away. Worse, these hoods also can easily get twisted off-set, causing slight vignetting in your shots if you don't notice it. I also had to remember to remove the hood when using the F70's built-in flash. On several shots I didn't and my pictures have a dark semi-circle on one side where the hood blocked the flash. This may not be a problem on other cameras, and isn't when using a shoe-mount flash. All in all, though, I was quite happy with the lens, especially since I didn't have to worry about losing or damaging an ulta expensive lens.

Strength:

Solid built.
Cheap.
Incredibly sharp.
Contrasty.

Weakness:

Slow.

I bought this lens after reading the reviews on this site. I did not expect too much from it because of the price and the manufacturer. I need a wide angle zoom but I can't afford the Canon 20-35mm. After taking 2 rolls of film, I was amazed with the quality of this lens. The pictures were sharp and contrast is well above my expectations. This lens has solid feel, even heavier than the Canon 20-35mm. The Canon may be a better lens but for this price, Tokina is definitely a winner.

Strength:

Helluva good price, good feel, slides look good.

Weakness:

Wouldn't use it for architecture work.

Was skeptical due to price, but have been pleasantly surprised. For the price this is a neat lens to own. I rarely need these focal lengths, so couldn't justify exhorbitant prices from other manufacturers. This lens fit the bill. Construction better than I expected, and images better than anticipated. Nice lens for general use. If you're shooting architecture, spend the big bucks for a better lens, but this lens shouldn't make the occasional shooter unhappy.

Flare!Flare!Flare!
A lot of distortion.

Cheap. Usable under favorite condition.
You got what you pay for. True.
The canon version cost more than 2 times of this one. But I tell you, it is as good/bad as Tokina version. Flare and distortion, both are typical problem for consumer lens in this price range.

Don't buy this one if you plan to use wide angle a lot. I kept it because the 1.6 X multipier with Eos D30. Even 19mm becames 30mm. Miss 14mm hard.
